How about top 25 finishes since 2002 (the last year available on ESPN)?

    Louisville: 2004 (6 - AP/7-USAtoday); 2005 (19/20); 2006 (6/7); nothing since 2006.

    Cincinnati: 2007 (17/20); 2008 (17/17), 2009 (8/9)

    BYU: 2006 (16/15); 2007 (14/14); 2008 (25/21); 2009 (12/12)

By that metric, the teams seem pretty comparable. BYU has one more top 25 finish, but Louisville and Cincinnati each have at least one top 10 finish, Louisville with 2.

Overall it isn't even close. Cincinnati? Really MRD?

If we're going with overall, then maybe the Big 12 should invite U of Chicago and Northwestern. Lots of history and a HUGE tv market.

That is an interesting one. byu stretch from 1978 - 1989 is the big difference. Do they have it ranked in the last 10 years? or even 20? I couldnt find one.

            • Speaking of media markets, if you consider the SLC media market to be the roughly 130+ miles from Tremonton/Logan southward to Payson or so, then why not expand those other markets geographically as well?

Granted Memphis is still out on an island by itself.

But Cincinnati (915k homes) is relatively close geographically to Dayton (483k), Louisville (667k), Lexington (503k) and perhaps a bit of Indianapolis (1,114) and Evansville (292k) markets, for a total of 3,974k homes, which puts it just ahead of Chicago as a sum total media footprint.

But it isn't just about TV sets viewing the game. Frankly I think if they grab BYU they may as well pick up Boise as well. That could make a solid Big (Whatever) North division.

If you are one of the remaining big 12 teams which team would be better for you?
                Let weigh these criteria:

Does the team affect your attendance?
                Bring TV sets?
                Place where you recruit?

To the rest of the big 12 is byu significantly different than Cincy or Louisville? Memphis sucks in football I will concede that but that is nice place to recruit.

Because those neighboring markets don't watch those teams.

Seems like BYU comes out ahead in the top two categories.

Sigh. Really? Leaving winning and tradition aside, what about attendance, facilities, media market (already discussed)? I pretty sure Memphis couldn't get more that 25,000 to a game. Louisville would be the closest but still pretty far behind BYU in all areas.

You mean all of the Dayton and tOSU fans aren't going to watch Louisville and Cincinnati football? I bet those Purdue fans will though. And those Kentucky fans love Louisville football.

San Jose State should be a factor as well for its access to the Bay Area market(s)!!!

There about 6 million people (1.8 million households) in the DFW area but only about 40,000 people show up to TCU games (more lately) and sometimes it is hard to even find their games on the radio. However, there are lots of folks that say they should be in the Big 12 for some reason. If Gary Patterson left they might be just another Baylor (but with a student body of less than 10,000). Point me to the TV ratings some great TV ratings for these teams and you might have a good argument.
