I don't think the money that BYU was making from the MWC has as much to do with it as the product that BYU can put on ESPN. I doubt ESPN would air 10 Louisville football games nationally even if they were only paying Louisville $1M a year. If the product can't stimulate interest nationally, its not going to be worth it to ESPN.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostUnless we know what the contract was in order to compare I don't think anybody can make that assumption. Byu was getting a little over 1 million dollars with the MWC. Considering that ESPN knew how much they were getting from the MWC, how much more are they getting from the espn deal?
BYU meets that second need (the first is the money you mention). I'm not sure by how much it meets it (i.e., we might just barely pass the threshold for projected national tv audience to make it worth it), but that point will be fleshed out this year.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

When Houston was in the Southwest Conference they were a force in Basketball and had some great years in football in the late 80's.Originally posted by USU Coug View PostUniversity of Houston? Really?
Market wise it would be a better move than any of the other conference USA teams.
I would put them on par with Baylor.

But adding Houston would not even approach filling the void left by A&M (that is if they plan on standing pat with 10 teams).Originally posted by BemidjiCoug View PostWhen Houston was in the Southwest Conference they were a force in Basketball and had some great years in football in the late 80's.

According ESPN radio Dallas Beebe is saying that he didn't say this. Or maybe he did in a moment of stupidity but now is denying it.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View PostBack to the lesson at hand,

They are down on the list a bit...Originally posted by USU Coug View PostUniversity of Houston? Really?
Texas does not want to go independent. Getting into a BCS bowl becomes much more difficult.
If Dodds can convince OU to stay, the Big 12 remains viable. He'll probably attempt to add three teams to create a 12-team conference to withstand future defections.
Arkansas, Notre Dame and BYU appear to be at the top of his list. Arkansas and Notre Dame are unlikely to bite, and BYU's interest is unknown.
After those three, TCU, Houston and SMU are the most sensible options. Houston and SMU would definitely accept, and there are people who think TCU could be talked out of jumping to the Big East."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

Speculation on my part, but follow my logic:Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View PostWhy?
1. BYU would never have agreed to anything LESS than the MWC contract, that would be crazy.
2. Texas certainly sees itself as a bigger commodity than BYU. In other words there is NO WAY Texas would settle for $15M/yr if they thought BYU was making more.
That is why I think BYU's tv deal with ESPN will fall between ~$6M - $12M. (Of course they will make more than that by playing big games, eg. isn't the vs. Tejas in Jerry World a ~$1.5M game?)
