The result was the net weakening of all teams across the conference hastening its slide into irrelevancy.

There is nothing to suggest history won't repeat itself.
Maybe the new commissioner is more savy than Larry Scott? But I don't really see the benefit of adding these teams to the Pac 12. What benefit do they bring? Is occasionally playing a game in Lubbock going to open up the Texas recruiting pipeline? Does stillwater and Manhattan, KS bring in a new media market? Do any of these teams have prestige to offer?

Now that I'm resigned to the fact that BYU won't get a big conference invite, sure... go ahead and water down your conference further. Make all these conferences bloated. It won't be long before the traditional powers start going independent.

    • Texas and USC should just join BYU in independence. USC has kicked the idea around and Texas already has its longhorn network. The PAC can backfill with Boise St and the DeathStar conference can take OU and little brother Oki St. Everyone will be happy, even SU since BSU is such a quality program and worthy replacement for USC.

            • Source -- Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Longhorns on the verge of making SEC move (espn.com)

The Austin American-Statesman reported Friday that a Big 12 source believed talks between the SEC and the two schools had been ongoing for more than six months, though SEC member Texas A&M had been left out of the discussions.

              Also

Several ACC athletic directors believed that their league would make a push in the next few years to add both Texas and Oklahoma -- along with Notre Dame, which already is a partial ACC member -- as it looks to restructure its TV contract, but the suddenness of the Longhorns' and Sooners' move to the SEC took them by surprise.
Those ACC ADs are way overvaluing their brand. UT and OU don't even really fit geographically with the ACC. The SEC is a natural fit for UT and OU both greographically and culturally...although Austin will be the weirdest city in the SEC...but it's Texas weird, not Oregon or California weird.

                • Texas and OU are gone, KU is in talks with B1G, would obviously bring KSU to make it an even 16.

That puts the BIG 12 at 6 teams. Perhaps a BIG 12 Contraction thread is in order?

                  • Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff told ESPN on Friday that while his conference isn't actively seeking new members, they're open to discussions with potential candidates.

More likely, according to multiple sources around the ACC and Pac-12, would be an even bigger "alliance" that could result in something as simple as the Pac-12 and ACC teaming up to work toward a new TV deal and help balance the power commanded by the new 16-team SEC or perhaps a merger that could lead to a 32-team super conference. Those same sources said the moves by Texas and Oklahoma might signal the first steps in a breakaway from the NCAA.

                    • Makes most sense for PAC16/B1G to merge into 32 team league and SEC/ACC to merge into 32 team league.

                      Abandon the NCAA, it’s worthless.

Umm, there's no way KSU is going to the B1G. Absolutely no way. Iowa State has a better shot.

Yeah, I agree… and with ISU gone BYUs chances of getting into the Big 12 are better.

No way that the B1G is even considering KSU. As Uncle Ted mentioned with a link, KU is a maybe consideration and if another team is needed, it will be Iowa St. KSU has as much chance being considered as Oklahoma St...which is none, nada, zilch, nicht. KU has an ally in Nebraska with the B1G but I question if Nebraska has much influence. But KU cannot be worse than Rutgers or Maryland (and possibly Nebraska...there I admitted it).

Edit: Moliere beat me to it.
