Meanwhile, over here in the West, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall has waved flags and flares like a signalman on an aircraft carrier since June. “Take us, take us.” He’s passionately campaigned the Big 12 and any other Power 5 league for inclusion of the Cougars.
BYU president Kevin J. Worthen, newly appointed this summer, is a passionate BYU sports fan with a unique legal intellect. I bet he is on top of this issue. When asked by KSL’s Dave McCann last summer about independence and if BYU would hold pat through his administration, Worthen replied:
“My guess is there will be at least one other shift somehow in terms of college football, it may be a separate division, it may be realignment, it may be both of those things and I don’t think it’ll be safe to predict that we could, that we’ll be in the same place. But I do like the fact that where we are at right now we have more flexibility than had we not made a change at that point.”
