BYU is an obvious choice in terms of added revenue, but I have a feeling that Sunday play is a bigger issue than some BYU fans would like to think. Other than BYU, there are no obviously great options. Cincinnati seems to be the most commonly cited option, but Cincinnati is not a great football draw and the market size is barely bigger than the SLC-Provo-Ogden market (plus the don't have a national fan base like BYU's). I think it would be ideal for the Big XII to try to bring in the Denver market again. That is a big whole that should be their territory. They aren't getting CU back though, and CSU and AFA are both mediocre at best. Would the Big XII be willing to take a chance on CSU getting better with more money to invest in coaching and resources? I think it would be in BYU's interest to have another western team. Boise doesn't really make sense since the Boise market is very small (not even a third of the size of SLC or Cincy). Would Cincy be that much better than AFA or CSU? Would either of those teams bring in the Denver market? They would at least make it possible to get distribution of a conference television network in Denver, which would bring in money regardless.

I think the lack of a 12th team is the biggest hurdle for BYU. I hope they are trying to come up with ideas to present to the Big XII. I am not an independence hater, but the Big XII seems to be a no brainer if we can make it work.
You bring up a good point about the Denver market. The Denver market is really the "CU" market when it comes to college sports. AFA and CSU are fringe when it comes to that. Denver is a pro city first, and a CU city next. I don't think investing millions into CSU would bring in the Denver market. Would help,...but it would never be back to the glory days of Nebraska vs. CU.

If I were the Big XII, I would look at it like this. The Pac-12 has a flat out lock down in the Western United States. The MWC made a serious run on competing, but, that was blown up by the land grabs of the BCS conferences. To compete with the Pac-12 (because the Eastern US is so competitive and saturated and competitive in their own markets)...that I would compete now with the Pac-12.

I would bring in BYU - for all the obvious reasons stated previously. Even with their warts, they are by far the best available option and brings a lot of good things with them ...more so than any negatives. Competes head on with Utah, and brings back some recruiting clout and controversy as to who is the better program in Utah and that brings exposure to both programs and conferneces. Good stuff.

Next...I would punch the Pac-12 right in the mouth and take San Diego State with BYU. Yeah yeah yeah...SDSU is the team that always underachieves. But with investment, and a decent confernece affiliation, they could/would compete with the other California schools. That would give the Big XII two separate footprints in the Western US that they currently don't have. They compete with the Pac-12 for recruits, bring premier teams into the West and it's "game on" from there on out. The Pac-12 has a monopoly and it's wide open for someone to go toe-to-toe with them. BYU & SDSU would do a more thorough job of doing this. BYU & CSU would not achieve what they are after (Denver market).

Hmm... Good motivation for me to remain active I guess.

I would love this more than anyone. But I think the addition of West Virginia took the Pacific Time Zone off the table for the Big 12. I think it's unlikely they ever add BYU due to the headaches of dealing with three time zones. Four is even less likely.

Hmmm. This seems like a dangerous statement. Tough to prove.

I agree that Denver is a pro market and that CSU and AFA are fringe teams in the market (though I think CSU has a bigger Denver following than you might expect), a big chunk of the money that conferences are pulling in right now (or trying to pull in anyways in the case of the Pac XII) is money that comes from distribution of conference networks. The networks get a small fee for every subscriber ($.10/month a subscriber or something like that). When there is a local team in a television market, the local cable companies are more likely to include the conference sports network in the basic package which means more subscriptions and more money for the network, even if there aren't that many people that actually watch the channel. I believe the satellite companies do something similar where the conference network is available on a certain tier if local teams are in the conference and on an upper tier or sports only tier if there are no local teams. Bringing in a Colorado team would probably mean getting on basic cable in Denver and likely Colo Springs as well. Denver+CS is significantly larger than the San Diego market. That doesn't mean that ratings are not important ... just that there is more than just ratings that go into the economics.

The Big XII doesn't have its own network yet though, so it may be a moot point. I imagine they would start one if they thought it would bring in more revenue though.

I was waiting for that one.

You and UVaC should take this show on the road; he sets 'em up, and you knock 'em out of the park.

                  • Interesting...

But its long-standing deal with the Holiday Bowl could end after an association that has stretched throughout the Big 12's 17-season history.

Overwhelming support for BYU, including a breakdown of all the potential candidates by academic ranking, endowment, football and basketball rankings and attendance, etc. The breakdown is right above a great gif of a hot chick hoola hooping in a bikini.

                        • Bad news, guys. Tuxedo Yoda said on twitter that BYU can kiss the Big 12 goodbye forever.

Right or wrong, BYU just lost any support from Texas it had because of the Desmond Harrison fiasco. BYU can kiss the B12 goodbye forever.

                            • My understanding of the situation is that Harrison took the classes even though it is clearly stated by BYU that they can't be used in his situation. Now Texas is taking BYU to court?
