We never would have made the tournament if we had been in the MWC this year. I don't mind the WCC.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I agree with his football take, disagree with hoops.
Football: his stated point was that independence isn't going to kill BYU football and it is better than staying in the old MWC. He also made a concerted effort to stress that it is NOT necessarily better than being in the B12. I don't have a problem with that. In fact, I don't see why he is wrong on that front. All that dicta about Notre Dame was irrelevant to his main point. It was distracting, if anything, but doesn't detract from his core point.
Basketball: his point is that he likes the WCC more than the MWC. I disagree. I would rather play New Mexico, SDSU, and UNLV than Gonzaga and St Mary's. However I will admit that the gap is narrowing. Gonzaga is a high profile team year in and year out. And St. Mary's is respectable. I can live with that trade-off. The rest of the MWC is the same crap as the rest of the WCC so to me that is an even split.
I also completely disagree with his attempt to even assert that the WCC is preferable or comparable to being in the B12. What a joke. Kansas, K-State, Texas, West Virginia, Baylor...wtf is he thinking? He said he likes playing in small gyms?
I can get with his claim that BYU can "still accomplish its goals" in the WCC (assuming the goal is to make the Dance and be on TV). But that doesn't put both conferences on par with one another, not by a longshot.
Overall, his article was way too long and didn't really offer anything new. The timing is odd, as well. Why write that article now?Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Are you suggesting he wrote this in response to Swaim's tweets?Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostBecause byu has been sabotaged so it looks like Indy football and WCC other sports is long term solution.
I suppose that is as good a hypothesis as any. And it would explain the timing. How funny. What does someone like Wrubell get out of countering Swaim's tweets? These guys must be bored in the offseason.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I think a lot of fan apathy has set into the program. BYU is not good at leveling with the fan base. Maybe no program really is. That being said I think they are going to make an effort to "persuade" as much as possible that BYU fans still have it really good.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostAre you suggesting he wrote this in response to Swaim's tweets?

Anger or frustration still shows fan interest. Apathy is a worse problem to deal with.

It's little different than the MWC.Originally posted by Jacob View PostYes. Exactly. Because WCC is a terrible conference with nobody schools. I have no interest in watching 90% of the conference games.
In 2011-12, we were 12-4 in conference play, with the 4 losses by an average of 13.75 points, and the 12 wins by an average of 17.33 points
In 2010-11, we were 14-2 in conference play with the 2 losses by an average of 13.5 points, and the 14 wins by an average of 17.5 points.
In 2009-10 we were 13-3 in conference play with the 3 losses by an average of 6.67 points, and the 13 wins by an average of 20.54 points.
If anything, the WCC is marginally more competitive than the MWC was.

This type of reasoning does nothing for me. Perception is reality and the WCC is perceived (rightfully so, IMO) as a cute little crap conference. That's all it is. Couldn't care less about any of the teams in the WCC. At all. If the MWC invited us back for all sports but football, I'd do that in a heartbeat (over the WCC, not over the Big 12)Originally posted by BYUMizzou View PostIt's little different than the MWC.

I am sure you didn't forget the 10-11 and 9-10 teams were superior teams to the 11-12 team or did you?Originally posted by BYUMizzou View PostIt's little different than the MWC.

For me, it would depend on what the MWC would look like. It's a moot point, though, because the MWC already told BYU that they couldn't play with them unless they were a football member.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostThis type of reasoning does nothing for me. Once BYU went independent in football, the olympic sports had to go somewhere. Where else would you put them? The WAC? Big West? Big Sky? What's a better alternative?

Yes, I really it's the best they can do, but any justifications to make it look better than it is is hard to swallow for me. It's turd polishing, plain and simple.
