This makes sense. The Big 12 will bring higher highs during special years than are currently possible, but will also bring lower lows (read: invisibility on TV).Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI'm not in favor of BYU remaining independent but see some element of risk with joining the Big 12. BYU is a conservative institution and may have some risk aversion that come along with Big 12 membership so it tries to negotiate and mitigate some of the risk. And maybe it backfired.
Independence + (branding, scheduling, and broadcasting control) = better average visibility overall across the years.
I can see where the BOT and the Corp would value their current position because it is a safe and beneficial arrangement. Long-term stability and all...

Actually, no. The new contract with Fox, that begins next year, will have almost every game, except one per team, shown under the Tier 1 or Tier 2 contract. Every conference game will be shown under either the Tier 1 or Tier 2 contracts. One game per team is reserved for teams local TV contracts and any game (all sports) not picked up under the Tier 1 and Tier 2 contracts can be shown by the school's Tier 3 TV provider.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI'm not in favor of BYU remaining independent but see some element of risk with joining the Big 12. I think BYU has some legitimate concerns about decreased exposure in the Big 12. For example, in 2003 a Nebraska-Penn St. game was not picked up and went to T3/PPV. Nebraska was 2-0 and ranked at the time but Penn St. was 1-1 and had lost the week before. Nebraska also finished 7-7 the year prior.
But I also think of the increased opportunity for BYU in the Big 12 if/when BYU goes on a winning streak behind the next Steve Sarkisian or Ty Detmer. That would be huge and probably against a quality schedule. Additional publicity would come from BCS title game talk and it wouldn't be "does BYU deserve the shot" because BYU would have earned it in the Big 12. BYU could be playing in primetime on ABC against Texas or OU in LES being led by Jimmer in shoulder pads. Such exposure would be worth the risks of becomming another Kansas - which I think will occur anyway if BYU stays independent.

But there is also significant risk in staying as an independent. Lets say we make it through the eight year contract without attaching to a conference, but the football product is less attractive than it was when they negotiated the deal last year. What are the terms of any extensions? Exposure could decrease exponentially if our product on the field takes a consistent downturn.Originally posted by NorthwestUteFan View PostThis makes sense. On the other hand, if we are continually sucking it up on the field, do we really want that suckitude available for display nationally, yea even internationally?"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

Holy crap! I can't take anymore of this. What are we a bunch of pussies?!! "Oh boo-hoo, we aren't in the Big 12"! I know this sucks, but K-Dog and all you other nancies, grow a pair!
I almost never post, I get what I need from lurking. I lurk because I care...but now I post because I feel duty bound! When will anyone here figure out that whole mess has little to do with BCS inclusion or money. It has mostly to do with exposure. And like it or not, our deal with ESPN has given that to us. The BOT does NOT want to give that up. Plain and simple. That is where we are coming from in any negotiation. Think about it. The BOT loves it when we are on TV and the announcers mention the number of missionaries or married men we have on the team 10x more that what the score is. Thus it is and thus it always will be.
Having said that, do I want BYU in the B12? Of course. Will I turn in my fan card and start cheering for the Utes if we don't? HELL NO!! Why would I cheer for a team that has not only openly ridicules my school and what WE stand for as a university at every chance they get, and also believes that their inclusion into a BCS conference is somehow proof of their superiority? They make me sick! Basically bending over to those arrogant, money grubbing ass holes for a piece of the proverbial BCS pie. Whores!! Why in the world would I root for them? So, we're out of the B12 and the BCS picture. Do any of you believe that even given inclusion into a conference that we would would be given any more of a shot at a BCS championship? IF you do you are really naive! Just like those jackballs up north with their "PAC greatness" intact. I guarantee they will have as many BCS championships as we do in the next 20 years.
I say good for BYU for sticking to what is good for OUR program. It takes real balls to be a Cougar fan. And no I'm not one of those "Yahoo! we're Independent" types. But I am first and foremost a Cougar, and know that being one sometimes will require a little more intestinal fortitude than Albert François Lebrun. We shall have our sweet reward.
Rant over...flame away.
