  • Here's a warm fuzzy thought.

IF...BYU rejected a Big XII offer, or were too demanding and they lost one, then:

    1) The Big XII would be pissed at BYU and would most likely snub them in the future;
    2) Pac 12 doesn't want BYU
    3) MWC is pissed at BYU and most refuse to play BYU in the future
    4) WAC is pissed at BYU for blowing up their conference (perception anyway)

So, there you have it. EVERY conference in the West and Mid-Western United States would be pissed at BYU, and would look for chances to snub them in the future.

    Nice.

I guess Independence really IS the ONLY way to go for BYU because they aren't going to be landing in any conference soon. I wonder if BYU could court the Big East and then drop them like a rock and piss them off before this is all said and done.

I bet someone somewhere in the back rooms of the BYU athletic building, they are working overtime trying to figure out how to piss off the SEC and Big 10.

BYU ....the most hated team in America. No wonder ESPN wanted us...we are kinda like the goodie two-shoes/Oakland Raiders combo all wrapped up into one.

Hmm... Good motivation for me to remain active I guess.

Ok... that just makes me love being a Cougar fan in some cynical way.

That's a bit too hardcore, man. You should cheer for your brothers team.

I didn't care what Conference they were in, I just loved watching the Blue and White, being in the stadium, and eating expensive hotdogs on dry buns.

So focusing more on the NFL is more of a way to distract myself from this rollercoaster of emotions that this BIG 12 crap has put me through. I can't focus on the NFL. The Cowboys are killing me too.

You should consider the Bengals. They're exceeding expectations with Big Red at the helm.

The part I don't get is cheering for Utah unless someone already is an alumnus of the school.

But my wife's grandparents are die hard University of Montana fans. I've never been able to understand how they can continue to pay attention to a team that doesn't play at the highest division of college football. The reality of it is that BYU is about to find itself on the outside of a Superconference structure. Scheduling as an independent isn't really working out that well (although it really isn't that much worse than when BYU was in the MWC). When it appears as if the school sat with its thumb up its butt with the Big 12, then that just won't sit well with people that want to see BYU compete at the highest level possible.

So, I don't have to pay attention to BYU football. I like the NFL and NBA more already and we still have BYU basketball. If BYU doesn't care about its fans and instead cares more about rebroadcasting things like a 54-10 beatdown right after the BYU Book of Mormon McGlaughlin Group, then I don't have to continue caring about BYU football. I'm not as much of a diehard as many of you. I always paid about 10x more attention to the Niners growing up than BYU and now my time is more limited. So if I have to make a choice, then BYU may have made it quite easy by being perfectly okay playing SJSU and NMSU into perpetuity.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

He understands... and I said I'd wear black, so that's a consolation I think. There's still a chance, since he hasn't enrolled yet, he could wear blue. He's a T-bird that would love to play with his old buddies, just working on some Honor Code lifestyle changes for him.

                          • Deep Shades of Blue: The Big 12 and BYU's Complications

Many in Cougar Nation are up in arms over TCU's admittance to the Big 12 while BYU remains, for the time being, on the outside looking in.

People need to just step back from the cliff, exercise a little patience and realize that high-stakes negotiations are taking place. Despite rampant speculation that BYU has turned down the Big 12, or that it has somehow bungled negotiations with the league, the courtship between the two organizations is, in fact, continuing.

There have been reports in recent days that "complications" have arisen that have put BYU's joining the Big 12 in jeopardy. Those reports are stemming from on-going negotiations with the various media partners involved, as well as assurances regarding the frequency of future appearances by the Cougars and other schools on national television.

The BYU administration remembers full well how it was burned by the Mountain West television contract debacle. Certain promises were made verbally by people whom BYU trusted, but that trust was violated and promises were broken. The decision makers in Provo will not be so naive this time around. They have learned a painful lesson from their mistakes of the past. BYU wants to know what it would be signing up for -- and it wants it in writing.

The Horned Frogs jumped quickly at an opportunity that has been on BYU's plate now for weeks. You have to remember that this is the same TCU that has changed conferences five times in the past 16 years.

Privately, the BYU brass will admit that it was blindsided by last week's invitation to TCU. Not by the fact that the Big 12 offered TCU, but by how quickly everything came together.

TCU's options on the table were to go ahead and join a Big East on life support, or somehow try to save face and slink back to the Mountain West with its proverbial tail between its legs. So when the lifeboat that was the Big 12 came along, the Frogs leaped without looking. It didn't matter to TCU that certain publicized agreements designed to hold the league together have not been officially ratified and signed by the schools. The folks in Fort Worth were just plain giddy to finally be a part of the Big 12 -- the details be damned.

For BYU, the situation is different.

Outside of Notre Dame and Arkansas, two schools that immediately rebuffed overtures from the volatile Big 12, BYU has been at the top of the league's expansion list from the beginning.

That has put the university in some position of power in its negotiations; so has the fact that it has its own TV deal with ESPN for its football program, a comfy home for its other sports in the faith-based environment of the West Coast Conference, as well as national and international distribution of its athletic events via BYUtv.

The name of the game in all of this for BYU since it became a football independent is exposure. And BYU officials believe that they can have their cake and it eat too. They would like to join the Big 12, but they are looking to maintain a certain level of exposure and ability to build its brand in the process, and make sure its worldwide fan base will be able to see the Cougars play on a regular basis.

The fact that that Texas has made concessions to share Tier I and Tier II television revenue equally is a huge step in the right direction for the Big 12. But exposure through television appearances are also important keys for schools like Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State, who are seeking to build and bolster their brands as well.

In the past, programs like Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska have dominated national and regional television appearances in the Big 12. BYU and other schools in the league are wanting and trying to negotiate an assurance of a more equitable situation, hence the reports of "complications" arising over the past few days.
