This is nothing more than spin. If this were really an issue, the negotiations would have never made it out of August. Not to mention, you are talking about championship games that haven't been on Sunday for a few years now and that the NCAA has threatened retribution if you have Sunday championship games (because it causes problems for the selection committee) -- a large part of the reason the championship game was changed to Saturday.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostYeah, I just saw that on the newsbot.
The Sunday Bball championship issue is interesting, and I don't fault BYU for sticking to their guns on that one. That's just who BYU is.
I guess I'd have to know the details on the BYUTV issue. It doesn't make sense that it would be any more of an issue than the LHN (or any other third tier broadcasting rights).
It is also interesting that ESPN owns the rights to the championship games -- Fox does not come into this conversation. So if there really was a "Sunday issue", it was because ESPN didn't want BYU in the Big 12.

It's a very realistic possibility. I have no idea what was and was not discussed either. But, if it really did come down to the Sunday play issue, and they wouldn't budget on that, then I am just fine staying independent.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View PostI would like to know which of these items the TV partners couldn't give up. If they wouldn't budge on the no Sunday play, then that's that. Nothing else could be done. But all the leaks we heard centered on BYU's demands to be on national television a specified number of times and rebroadcast rights. It seems like the TV partners could have been using the Sunday play issue as a trump card, knowing BYU couldn't compromise on that, in order to get BYU to give in on the other demands.
They could say "look, we'll give up the option of holding the tourney finals on Sunday, but in return you have to give up your demands for minimum appearances". I have no idea if this is anywhere close to the truth...I'm just type-thinking.
As for the demanding a minimum number of appearances, that's just silly. Texas doesn't even have that. They are on TV because they put a good product out there that people want to see. If BYU does the same they will be on TV, too. I don't understand this demand.
As for BYUtv, why not try to make a deal that if the conference will allow BYUtv to broadcast any home games not picked up by ABC/ESPN or Fox, BYU will then share all profit from those games equally with the entire conference? If exposure is all that matters, and not money, then this deal seems pretty good to me. And Texas Tech, for example, wouldn't mind getting a share of money from BYUtv broadcasting a BYU-TCU basketball game when they otherwise would have received nothing.Last edited by Marvelous; 10-13-2011, 06:16 PM.

I thought ESPN was going to make sure BYU was "taken care of"
