Tom Holmoe interview today transcript (from nashty on CB):
Q: "will you be there in 2017" (kind of inaudible)
A: "i'm really excited about the Big 12's announcement that they're looking in to possible expansion....they've...teams are gonna be involved. We're excited and passionate about the opportunity and at this point in time there's not really a lot to report because we'll learn more a lot more in the next days and weeks to follow. At that point we'll have more to say. But this is something that's been a long time coming. And we'll try to put our best foot forward."
Q: "what is your guys' next move at this point?"
A: "we'll listen to what the instructions are we'll be given."
Q: "how excited should BYU fans be about the possibility of the Big12 conference?"
A: "well...i don't think there's any secret that this is has been a desire for a long time. we've always wanted to play at the highest level...when i watch our football team and our basketball team and all our olympic sports HAD a hard time getting games against Power Five schools in nonconference play...it's tough...for all those sports. And now, just to have that opportunity to be able to play those teams in the regular season and conference schedules...i love that. So we gotta a long way to prove our point but we're gonna get after it."
Q: "A few days ago this whole thing seemed dead...conference expansion...with the B12 namely...did you feel that or did you feel like it wasn't over?"
A: "I'm always optimistic. I'm never gonna say never and i just tried to keep our focus on what we can do. But what we can do is play good athletic teams...play well...You know the reason that we're in this discussion now at all is because of the history of BYU athletics. These players and the coaches and the teams have put together incredible seasons, year after year, decade after decade, and uh living in the intermountain west sometimes it doesn't go noticed but uh, the fact that we can have an opportunity right now is a credit to all the people that have done the work in the past."
Q: "do you rest on that reputation or are you actively selling..."
A: (interrupts questioner) "oh...i'm not resting at all."
Q: "so you're actively selling BYU?"
A: "Hey...we'll do everything we can to give these guys an opportunity."

Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

Does the Big12 really want the political baggage that comes with UH?Originally posted by YOhio View PostTexas is dumb. https://twitter.com/gregfenves/statu...22165591085056

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. I wouldn't be surprised if the slide in ESPN subscribers precipitated the Big 12 into expanding while the money is still there. Maybe, I've been reading too much Clay Travis.
But it appears to me that the Big 12 could add four more teams if they get more money up to 14 teams total. In my mind, the three obvious teams are BYU, Cincy and UConn. UConn is the only athletic program that has a better argument for being included in the P5 conferences than BYU. The fourth team is a mystery. It could be CSU or Central Florida I suppose. The few fans of Big 12 teams I know are fairly set against adding another Texas team.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I don't think UConn has a better case than BYU for P5 inclusion. UConn is terrible at football and good at basketball. Being good at basketball doesn't carry much water. When it comes to conference expansion, football is king. Nebraska is proof of that.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostI wouldn't be surprised if the slide in ESPN subscribers precipitated the Big 12 into expanding while the money is still there. I don't understand the Big 12 TV contract, perhaps it has been renegotiated. But when Nebraska and Colorado left, the remaining Big 12 teams got to keep a larger share of the revenues since the $$$ remained the same and was split two fewer ways. When A&M and Mizzou left, the Big 12 had to add two more teams because the TV contract called for a minimum of 10 teams. So unless something has changed, adding two additional teams will dilute the per-team revenue. Adding four teams will dilute it even further. I think the only school that can make a case for paying for itself when the Big 12 TV contract is up for renewal is BYU. That's the only available school that can add value at present.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

They're great in basketball, 4 championships in 16 seasons. But yeah, if they don't have a lot of fans that can be a problem.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI don't think UConn has a better case than BYU for P5 inclusion. I thought that the payout would increase for every team added up to 14?Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Given the big push for Houston, I could see BYU, Cincy, UConn and Houston. In reality, it would be nice to have Cincy, BYU, CSU and Houston.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostI wouldn't be surprised if the slide in ESPN subscribers precipitated the Big 12 into expanding while the money is still there. Correct.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI don't understand the Big 12 TV contract
Boren said that their existing Tier 1/2 contract with ESPN and Fox calls for a pro-rata increase for adding schools (about $20 million per school) - I think up to 6, but at least up to 4. Simply adding those teams won't automatically increase any other revenues (about $11 million per team last year), so if the additions all got an equal revenue share from the outset, then there would be less per-team revenue under the current contracts. Assuming they can't pull off P5 defectors like Arizona/ASU/UCLA, any teams added are likely to phase in to a full revenue share over time, just has been done with other P5 additions (Utah, TCU, etc). Phasing in those revenues for the newbies results in a chunk of the new revenues being distributed to the existing members, meaning they make more money overall until a) the new members are phased into a full share and/or b) the TV contracts are renegotiated.
