WVU AD is interested in expansion if it is the 'right' (Eastern) teams...

WVU AD in favor of Big 12 expansion if 'right' teams
West Virginia athletic director Shane Lyons is a proponent of Big 12 expansion. He's not in favor of the Big 12 adding just anyone, however.
In an interview with WVIllustrated.com, Lyons said there was a conference presidential committee "kind of" looking at the possibility of adding two more teams.
“There's a presidential committee that's kind of looking at that as well, but as athletic directors, we try to look at the bigger picture of what actual teams and partners we could bring in that would add value to the conference and that's still being explored,” Lyons said.
"I'm in favor of expansion if it's the right two teams to bring in,” he continued. “Obviously for us, it would be nice to have more of an eastern partner, but at the same time, I want to make sure it's the right partner and from a revenue standpoint it doesn't impact us negatively as well by bringing additional partners in.”
[...]
BYU has consistently expressed interest in joining a Power Five conference in recent memory and would likely be one of the few teams in the possible "right" category. But the Cougars would not be an eastern team. Provo, Utah, is nearly 2,000 miles from Morgantown. It would be the longest intra-conference trek for any Power Five conference matchup.
Who could be an eastern team? That's a great question. If we're making a list off the top of our heads, our top three – Memphis, Cincinnati and UCF – all are in the American Athletic Conference.
But according TuxYoda the AD's don't have anything to do with it... so we are still good.

Why does every AD clarify that expansion will only take place if the target school is the "right partner" and if doing so makes sense from a financial standpoint?? Aren't those things self-evident criteria?
I'm waiting for the first AD to come along that expresses interest in conference expansion regardless of partner or economic impact. I mean, we saw it once already with the PAC 10, so who is to say that we can't see it again at some point?Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Maybe we should just move BYU to Kirtland. Then we get in with the eastern markets. Might be easier than what is going on now.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostWVU AD is interested in expansion if it is the 'right' (Eastern) teams...

This is the crazy thing with all of the recent expansion-most of the teams don't come close to paying their own way; Rutgers, Maryland, Pittsburgh, TCU, West Virginia, Syracuse, Louisville, Utah and Colorado are not even close to paying their own way. It also seems unlikely that the monster contracts that are being paid out would have been (much) smaller without the realignment. If the Big 12 is allowed to hold a 10 team playoff then the whole thing was a money losing boondoggle.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostWhy does every AD clarify that expansion will only take place if the target school is the "right partner" and if doing so makes sense from a financial standpoint?? They aren't worth 20 million/year or 25 million/year like they will be getting when they have a full share. You think Utah or Colorado is worth 22 million/year to the PAC? Or Maryland is worth 25 million/year to the B1G? TAMU is probably worth what they're getting from the SEC, but that's more likely due to the huge population and media market of Texas, than their actual worth.Originally posted by scottie View PostHonest question -- what do you mean by paying their own way? Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

Make no mistake, Texas A&M is probably worth every penny given to it by the SEC. It's a very large school with a huge alumni base and following. Not sure how one would value A&M's actual worth outside of population and media market since it's value in large measure is derived by a large following and alumni base which in turn drives media coverage.Originally posted by The_Douger View PostThey aren't worth 20 million/year or 25 million/year like they will be getting when they have a full share. As time passes, I care much less about the Big 12. That will change if/when BYU gets invited to join the conference. A decent conference can be composed of the teams who left the University of Texas/SWC/Big 12: Arkansas, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

This is what I meant. These schools help expand some geographical reach, but the one's I listed don't move the needle in terms of eyeballs in such a way as to bring in $22 million. Not even close. BYU doesn't fit that either, but I am wondering why it is part of the criteria now, but not at the outset of expansion. Is it possible that all of the consolidation happened because everyone is just afraid of getting poached?Originally posted by The_Douger View PostThey aren't worth 20 million/year or 25 million/year like they will be getting when they have a full share. Maryland brings the DC market and the Baltimore market. That's worth a lot of money. Texas A&M is worth every penny they are getting from the SEC. Both of these schools left major conferences and benefited big time from the move after initial skepticism. Byrd stadium used to have 15,000 show up for ACC football games. Those days are gone.
