  • b12 will expand, byu will not be included

    http://www.bcsnn.com/big-xii/777-the...he-charge.html

Shane Lyons, the athletic director at West Virginia, has made it known that he wants the Big 12 to expand and start adding the right teams to the league. The Mountaineer AD didn't define what the criteria is or who the right teams are, but it isn't hard to figure out.The topic has been discussed several times before here on the Big 12 blog. We covered why Boise State and BYU won't be added. We talked about the possibility of UConn and other prospects joining the Big 12 a year before that. The whole time we've been speculating about the league adding more teams, the overall strength of the conference has been called into question. But a couple bad bowl seasons will do that. Just ask the Big East.
So who will the Big 12 add if it adds anyone? The answer is still as simple as it was before West Virginia's AD spilled the beans that they want more teams. It's going to be between Cincinnati, Memphis, UCF along with long shots UConn, USF and ECU.
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

    • It's cute West Virginia thinks they're going to spearhead the expansion in the Big 12.

Is it possible that all of the consolidation happened because everyone is just afraid of getting poached?
At the outset of expansion, it was all about getting to 12 teams to hold a CCG. Like you, I don't understand expansion past 12 teams. As others have stated, the only school that meets that criteria is Texas A&M - maybe Missouri came close enough and the SEC wanted an even number of teams.

But the Big 12 has suffered from narrow vision. The Big 12 should have added BYU and Louisville (in addition to TCU and West Virginia) when it had the chance. Instead, the Big 12 wants an exemption to hold a CCG with 10 teams which I doubt will occur since the Big Ten and PAC 10 could have held a CCG without expanding. If the Big 12 had competent leadership they would have never lost Texas A&M and Missouri and probably could have kept Nebraska in the fold.

And now West Virginia wants to add eastern teams in the Big 12 so they are not as isolated. Ugh.

Isn't that the tail wagging the dog? I just don't see how teams like Central Florida or Memphis move the needle much. Cincy makes some sense, but it continues to befuddle me that BYU can't get a sniff.

Your befuddlement, of course, assumes that we aren't getting a sniff.

            • LOL @ Texas. Didn't Deloss Dodds used to own the Big 12? And now Oliver Luck's replacement from West Virginia is running things? If the Big 12 needed help with moonshining or burning couches, I can understand consulting the Mountaineers. But when did the rest of the Big 12 become WV's beyotch?

I'm more inclined to believe the things we're hearing aren't terribly reliable, so we can't really say whether we are or are not being included.

Why the B12 doesn't want BYU:

That was the argument, but it's a dubious one. Rutgers supposedly brings the NYC market too. Even if that has any merit, this went down as bundled cable packages are seemingly on their way out, which will put an end to uninterested cable subscribers subsidizing the conference network. Rutgers' athletic department in particular is a disaster, and now the B10 is stuck with them.

I agree; Nobody cares about Maryland in DC and not even that many do in Baltimore. I think there is more excitement about Johns Hopkins Lacrosse in Baltimore than there is about anything from Maryland.
                          PLesa excuse the tpyos.

                            this is true.

You have no idea what you are talking about when you say Baltimore doesn't care about the Terps. Hopkins lacrosse does not rival the Terps anywhere in Maryland except on North Charles Street. Hopkins shares Baltimore with Loyola,UMBC and Towson. Again you have no idea what you are talking about.

Wait, what was your main point again? Something about North Charles Street?

Putting aside my stupendously stupid opinion and the fact that pellegrino, who may know something about it, agrees with me, I note that your spirited defense of the extent of the terps' fan base doesn't mention Washington, D.C. Bringing Baltimore some is just not enough to get anyone excited, even if they could bring it!
