The press conference party was held yesterday at The Pie. (I ended up being in Salt Lake a week earlier than expected. ) No news media showed up. Just as I predicted. Jerks. We'll reschedule.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostDoes all of this mean that the press conference party at the Pie on 6/11 is canceled?“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Heck no. It may become a "drown our sorrows" party, but still a party none the less.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostDoes all of this mean that the press conference party at the Pie on 6/11 is canceled?"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

Now that I've given this more thought, I'm praying to Allah that one of two things happens. #1 - No conference expansion at all. #2 Big 12 is dissolved. I don't like BYU's chances if the Big 12 loses a couple of schools and decides to replace them rather than join the PAC 10.Just try it once. I tend to agree with you. I'm ok with the status quo, and I'd much rather see the MWC become an auto bid conference by adding some Big12 leftovers and the spudding broncos.Originally posted by BlueHair View PostNow that I've given this more thought, I'm praying to Allah that one of two things happens. #1 - No conference expansion at all. #2 Big 12 is dissolved. I wonder if the big xii leftovers (4 of them) could add 4-5 teams (byu, utah, tcu, boise, unlv) and remain intact? That would be preferrable to a bloated mwc.Originally posted by pellegrino View PostI tend to agree with you. Originally posted by BlueHair View PostThat was a good read. Just for fun I looked up some rankings (US News & World Report. All schools ranked are considered Tier 1 schools).
Current PAC 10
#4 Standford
#21 Cal
#24 UCLA
#26 USC
#42 Washington
#102 Arizona
#106 Washington State
#115 Oregon
#121 Arizona State
Unranked Tier 3 School! - Oregon St
Here's the rankings for the Big 12 schools that might be headed to the PAC 10
#47 Texas
#61 Texas A&M
#77 Colorado
#102 Oklahoma
Unranked Tier 3 School - Texas Tech
Unranked Tier 3 School - Oklahoma State
Outside looking in:
#71 BYU
#80 Baylor
#88 Iowa State
#96 Kansas
#126 Utah
Unranked Tier 3 School - Kansas State
It's interesting that everyone thinks BYU's academics suck, but they would be among the top of the PAC 16 if they were included. Why in the world would Baylor be left out in favor of Texas Tech or Oklahoma State?
I have no problem if the PAC 10 doesn't want a religious school. Saying the reason is academics is just not true.As has been said about a million times already, academics = research, not undergraduate teaching. Utah is far, far better than BYU when it comes to research, as everyone here already knows. BYU by design is not a research institution.Originally posted by Maximus View PostThe academics that are better than Utah's and a few Pac 10 schools?

Just curious, but why is BYU listed as an extensive research Universty (along with Utah) by the Carnegie foundation?Originally posted by woot View PostAs has been said about a million times already, academics = research, not undergraduate teaching. Interesting. I'm sure the reason is somewhere there in fine print.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostJust curious, but why is BYU listed as an extensive research Universty (along with Utah) by the Carnegie foundation?

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Probably because the criteria have little to do with research. It seems that offering at least 50 doctorates across 15 fields is good enough. BYU gives away lots of doctorates in non-research fields like business, law, and education. The same foundation, using more stringent criteria, listed Utah and even Utah State as "Research I" universities, without a mention of BYU. http://www.washington.edu/tools/universities94.htmlOriginally posted by LiveCoug View PostJust curious, but why is BYU listed as an extensive research Universty (along with Utah) by the Carnegie foundation?

This shouldn't be a controversial point. Research is not the focus at BYU, and no one would claim that it is. Research is the focus of a great many other institutions, and these are the ones that will get preferential treatment from the Pac10 and Big10, and probably the other conferences as well.
I'd recommend http://mup.asu.edu/research2009.pdf as an example of a good source.

"Far, far better" is an exaggeration, as outside of the life sciences, Utah's graduate programs are a bit of a joke. IIRC, the US News rankings consider endowment size and research programs as factors in their rankings. Right or wrong, the US News rankings have an impact on academic reputations, and I guarantee that a conference that is allegedly concerned about academic reputation keeps an eye on them.Originally posted by woot View PostAs has been said about a million times already, academics = research, not undergraduate teaching. Make no mistake--BYU's religious affiliation is their major black mark, a black mark that was made darker with Prop 8. That's not persecution syndrome talking. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah
