  • What did the Pac 12 ever due to Dennis Dodd? He's as obsessed as this place.

We're gloating that the P10 is dead while also crowing that we're joining a conference where the Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the conference just bolted to the SEC? I choose to keep my glee in abeyance.

Totally sincere question here: What is your best guess as to what happens?

            In the short term, nothing.

in the long term, major upheaval as college football congeals into two super conferences.

              That's a copout answer.

In the short term, something has to happen with the P12 media deal. The current deal expires in a little over a year. If the P12 is going to add any teams, they have to do it before June 30. The stakes couldn't be higher right now for the conference.

              • I think the PAC adds Rice (for the Houston market) and UofChicago (for the Chicago market). They might also make a play for NYU so they can have four of the top ten markets (Phoenix is #10) while also upgrading their academic profile.

same answer: they don’t add anyone because no one adds value, and before next year they enter a deal. I have no idea what the deal is but I’d guess there will be a streaming component and the money will be in line with the big12 and the acc.

now I may be wrong and Greg Swaim has the insider knowledge, but that seems to me the most likely short term play.

Stop it with the Swaim nonsense. Nobody takes him seriously.

Lots of national journalists and media experts are saying that ESPN and P12 are worlds apart on a deal. The offer on the table is allegedly 20% linear, 80% streaming and the valuation is small. ESPN laying off thousands of employees so it makes sense. Now let's suppose that there is some big streaming deal from Apple (nobody else seems serious). That would be the kiss of death for the conference and there would be a mass exodus of players to the transfer portal.

Also, the fact that they still don't have a deal in place is a significant piece of evidence that they can't come up with a deal anyone likes. This was supposed to be "a layup", right?

You are groveling in ant shit. And believing what you want to believe, as is your wont.

Looks like the Big 12 deal's present value is $30 million a year per team, at most. Six year term. Assuming worst case scenario for the Pac 12, what's the delta between what it will get and the Big 12? 10%? 20%? It doesnt' matter. But probably not near that. Like AJ says, the present is just stop gap, everything is fluid. The Pac 12 teams are not thinking about a million or two more this year or next. That's nothing. They're interested in the benefit to their brands of being associated with west coast elites or (as far as the west coast elites are concerned, with one another), they are posturing for further consolidation (as to which Big 12 membership would provide no advantage), and they are factoring in the expanded tournament and the best way to access it.

If things are as dire for the Pac 12 as the desperate Big 12 loyalists propagandize (Conzano has a column today that says it's more disinformation), it should really be obvious that no Pac 12 team would be interested in the Big 12 even if our country were hit by an atom bomb and the B1 and SEC were vaporaized. I know it hurts to not be wanted, but face the facts. Jeez. It should be plain as the nose on your face that whatever is the best deal the Pac can make, its teams are simply not interested in joining S-Town, er, I mean the Big 12.

I don't know how we have survived not being associated with Wazzou and/or Oregon State.

                        • Sadly, though my heart wants to believe all the rumors of the PAC's imminent demise, my head keeps warning me that premature celebration is unwarranted. So I'll assume that the PAC survives as-is with a contract similar to the Big 12's. If/when contracts are signed or conference membership invitations are accepted, then I'll allow myself to believe the associated rumors were true.

Lol. Another master class in hubris/arrogance.

Hey, you willing to put some money down on this? How about a $100 bet? If the P12 gets a new media deal and stays intact with no defections, I venmo you $100. If one or more teams defect from the P12, you venmo me $100. Deadline = June 30. If nothing happens by then, we revisit the bet. What do you say? I could even go $200 if you want.
