  • Interesting summary in the LA Times:

    https://www.latimes.com/sports/story...move-uc-impact

The regents are saying that they may still block the UCLA move. Which of course, would immediately trigger a B1G offer to Stanford, likely causing some or all of the 4 corner schools to bolt, thus ruining the futures for both UCLA and Cal.

Also, USC/UCLA bolting is estimated to cost each remaining school in the P10 about $13M per year.

Interesting. Seems like the regents are flexing, but I can't see them not letting the UCLA move go through.

If for some reason they do not allow the move and Stanford gets the nod, I don't understand why that would lead to the 4 corner schools bolting. With UCLA still around, the PAC would have a presence in the LA market and added value. Why leave that?
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

That’s true. P12 would still be anything but stable though.

        • Maybe the B1G will also announce they are inviting Stanford as well...

OK, Cal too just to shut California up.

            Ouch...

Before Covid each PAC school was getting about $34M... this means that rumored offer of $24.5M from ESPN was actually rather reasonable (and generous).

            • So it seems that the UC board could actually force UCLA to stay in the P12...

Blocking UCLA's move to Big Ten could have massive fallout for UC regents
              [...]
The debate over UCLA’s ability to unilaterally switch conferences centers on a 1991 UC system policy that delegated authority to campus chancellors to execute their own contracts, including intercollegiate athletic agreements. Charlie Robinson, general counsel for the UC system, said during the regents meeting Wednesday that the board chairman could supersede that authority.

“One mechanism would be for the [regent] board chair to say, ‘I’m directing you, in this instance, to stand down,’ ” Robinson said, “and the board will be exercising authority in this area.”

To protect itself from similar quandaries in the future, UC system leadership has proposed new rules that could limit campuses from making major decisions involving athletics contracts on their own. The regents are expected to vote on the proposal at their September meeting in San Diego.

The longtime observer said he could recall only two instances in which the UC regents overturned or modified actions taken by a university chancellor or president under existing delegations of authority.

In 1970, the board of regents reversed UCLA chancellor Charles Young’s decision to rehire Angela Davis as an acting assistant professor of philosophy after she had identified herself as a member of the Communist Party.

In 1996, the board of regents informally asked UC President Dick Atkinson to modify his decision to delay, by one year, the implementation of affirmative action-related resolutions.

The observer questioned whether the regents had the legal authority to retroactively rescind Block’s decision that had been communicated to Michael V. Drake, president of the UC system. Moreover, the observer wondered if the regents wanted to invite the sort of chaos that intervening in this matter would create.

“If the regents set the precedent that any action taken under delegations of authority can be undone by the board,” the observer said, “any loan agreement for a new campus building, the acceptance of a gift, the naming of a building — all of those matters would then be subject to question.”

I hope they do it! Then the B1G could take Stanford, Oregon, and UW. The Big 12 can take AZ, ASU, and Colorado. SU said that Cal and Utah wouldn't join the Big 12 and I assume UCLA would be in that same lifeboat. They (UCLA, Cal, and Utah) could pick up Ore St and WSU on their way to the MWC.

              • On the clock to accept ESPN's low ball offer (their only offer currently) or on the clock to find a new conference?

I mean, maybe you’re right, but the head honchos that run the SEC & B1G look at that’s as an FCS league.

Yeah, that is funny. The B1G Commish has not held back on who he wants to add the conference to get to 20 teams... That list doesn't include Utah or Colorado.

Big Ten Commissioner Makes His Thoughts On Expansion Very Clear

The Big Ten already made a huge splash this year, announcing that USC and UCLA will become conference members in 2024.

Well, it sounds like Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren isn't done expanding the conference.

Warren told Bryant Gumbel of HBO's Real Sports that he sees the Big Ten having 20 members. He also envisions a scenario where the conference is paying its players.
                            [...]
Earlier this year, California, Oregon, Stanford and Washington were linked to the Big Ten. Notre Dame has also been linked to the conference.

Warren has already been asked if the Big Ten will pursue Notre Dame.

“It wouldn’t be prudent for me to pursue anyone in another conference,” Warren responded. “We already have them in our conference for hockey. You know how much I love Notre Dame. I have great respect for them.”
                            https://thespun.com/big-ten/big-ten-...ion-very-clear

So adding the Pac 12 teams (U$C, UCLA, Cal, Oregon, Stanford, and Washington) will get them to the 20 members the B1G Commish envisions for his "super conference". If Notre Dame says they want in I could see them saying the hell with Cal. NBC may not have the money for ND in the future given they are spending a huge wad of money on the B1G with their new contract. ND may not have much of a choice but to join the B1G.
