I don't buy there is any trend that the best athletes don't go on missions. Talking about guys with supposed big upside.

Devin Durrant, Shawn Bradley, Mark Bigelow, Paul Shoemaker, Ben Olsen, Sean Covey, just to name a few.

I hope what Jimmer and Jake show is you can indeed come to BYU and not get any pressure to go if that isn't your desire.

Jacob Bower and Sam Doman were 3 star kids.

Munns, Lark, Cooper and Gaskins were 4 star kids (The later being JC 4 stars)

BYU has had no problems recruiting highly touted QBs in recent years when you have that much of a surplus at one position you are bound to have some attrition. On the flip side Beck and Hall were only 2 stars and both are in the NFL.

        Yes it did.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Any success we've had in the last +10 years has been built on the backs of a couple ** and *** star recruits out of AZ and a kid from SLC that even our own coaches didn't want to play at QB for most of his time in the program.
Some guys get underrated because they play for average or subpar high school teams or they come from a place that's off the beaten path. If some of these kids were in SoCal, Texas or Florida then the people that rate these kids would be all over them.

With that said, it is a little surprising that Max Hall and John Beck weren't a bit more highly rated. If I'm not mistaken, they both went to Mountain View in Mesa and that school at that time had been a well known for years. I was looking up two brothers from my high school and found out that they're living down in that area now and are coaching the current powerhouse down in those parts.

This is interested. I just looked up our BBall All American list, and you have to go all the way back to Russell Larsen to find one that served a full mission (Meaning I'm not counting Cummard).

            Russell Larson F 6-11 1995 Academic (1st)
            Mekeli Wesley F 6-9 2001 AP (HM)
Rafael Araujo C 6-11 2004 Basketball Times (2nd), AP (HM)
            Trent Plaisted F/C 6-11 2006 Scout.com Freshman (2nd)
            Keena Young F 6-6 2007 AP (HM)
            Lee Cummard G/F 6-7 2008 AP (HM)
            Jimmer Fredette

I'd say that's definitely a trend. Even among the LDS students.
Next year's MVP will be Davies. So the trend continues. Harrison is our next best hope and no mission plans. Maybe it changes if Hawes can improve after his mission and if Emery the younger goes on a mission.

As soon as you turn the heat off on your stove, crack an egg in there and start to lightly drag it around. I mean it's still Top Ramen, but a definite improvement. That plus a little of this: http://hawaiiloving.com/wp-content/u...3/Kamaboko.jpg were pretty much the standard way to spice us some ramen when we were kids. Fried spam is good too, but that takes more effort.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Looks like CMBF is wrong. There is a "trend" and it was really never interrupted. The one omission from your list was Shawn Bradley. He went on a mission and never returned. Had he returned, he'd have been on some lists.

Listen, if these guys came back exactly the same they were before, I wouldn't have an issue with them going on missions.

BYU had a string of very good to great QB play between Nielsen, Wilson, McMahon, Young and Bosco -- the one thing they had in common is none of them were RMs. If you want to throw Gary Sheide in there (he won the WAC in 1974) then it's even longer. After Bosco, BYU suffered through guys like Bob Jensen, Sean Covey and Steve Lindsley -- who were all RMs. In the 90s, BYU didn't have a single starter at the beginning of the year who had entered BYU as a member of the LDS church.

In the 2000s, all of a sudden we had RM QBs again. We got one good year out of Doman. We should have gotten two good years but apparently Charlie Peterson and Brett Engemann were too damn good (both also RMs). John Beck had one really good year. I'm not sure if we can call Max Hall (the best 12 months of my life!) a traditional RM.

So let's just encapsulate everything I just said --

73-85 seasons -- five different LDS QBs, none were RMs.

86-88 -- three different LDS QBs, all were RMs.

89-99 -- no QBs who were LDS prior to entering BYU.

00-09 -- six LDS QBs, five were RMs and one was gone for one year. Of the five RM QBs (not counting Max Hall), we got two good years out of them.

So the question is, Portland, you have 37 seasons between 73 and 2009 --

24 of these seasons had LDS QBs (not counting Detmer) as starters; 11 of these 24 seasons were started by QBs who had not served missions -- every single one of these seasons occurred between 73 and 85.

Every single one of the seasons where BYU had an RM QB occurred after 85. BYU didn't have a single true non-RM LDS QB between 1986 and 2009. They had five of them in a 13 year span between 73 and 85.

Do you still think there wasn't a trend? I'd like to hear your argument.

WTF!!! Tanner Magnum has not won the Heisman yet? I'm going to have to go back and re-read some of those articles because I was sure they said he had.

The rivals team recruiting rankings are out...

                        Let's see:

#1 Rank goes to Texas, of course.

                        Oklahoma, who cares.

#11 USC, bummer... not in the top 10.

#15 tOSU, maybe lost a 10 top spot due to the vest leaving.

#17 A&M, no wonder they are not happy about the longhorn network.

#24 Children of the Corn, can you say good bye to Texas recruiting?

#27 Oregon? did the recruiting money get cut off?

                        #36 TCU, good job Gary.

#40 BYU, maybe the independence thing hasn't caught on yet.

                        #45 BSU.

#50 Colorado actually made it into the top 50.

Hey, wait, where's Utah?!? Obviously this rivals recruiting ranking is a bunch of crap.

Is Florida State coming back? They finished #17 last year.

I've thought over the past several years that the ACC was where the Pac 10 was back in the late 90s, but perhaps things would improve once the coaching situation was settled at FSU and Miami.
