Grantland has some good stuff, but this one isn't. The analysis regarding his troubles is mostly decent, but the take-away that he's not doing well because he's not getting separation coming off screens and therefore is forced to create his own shot is just dumb. He sucks coming off screens because he's never had to do that; he's spent his entire life creating his own shot.

I just don't get why seemingly every one of the "experts" considers Jimmer to be a catch-and-shoot type. It's like they've never watched him play.

When Fredette comes off screens away from the ball, he averages just 0.636 points per possession. That puts him in the bottom 20 percent of all NBA players. He’s shooting 16.7 percent and committing turnovers 27.3 percent of the time. Since Fredette is a great shooter, people might expect him to be a better offensive threat when he works off screens. But moving with the ball and shooting the ball are two separate talents. Getting open off screens requires a lot of technique, and Fredette doesn't really understand the art of moving without the ball yet.

Fredette shoots 53.3 percent in catch-and-shoot situations and 32.3 percent off the dribble, according to Synergy Sports. This stat shows how important it is for Fredette to use screens effectively, so he can create the space he needs to catch and shoot. Fredette probably hasn’t learned to move without the ball because he almost never did it in college. Fredette worked off screens away from the basketball just 6.2 percent of the time during his senior season at Brigham Young. Rip Hamilton didn’t become a great off-the-ball cutter by doing it so infrequently.

The author acknowledges that he's basically never worked with off-ball screens, and connects the dots between why he needs to get better with them. We've all watched him in college and seen him be great creating with the dribble, but thus far in his pro career he hasn't been very effective doing it and according to the paragraph above has been much more efficient creating points in catch-and-shoot situations.

The part I disagree with is that I think the Kings have to find out if he's a one, because I just don't think he has much of a future as a 2-guard. But the tough part so far is his passing numbers don't look much like that of a 1, and his scoring looks more that of a 2 (or a triangle PG or other PG role where the 1 is not used as the primary playmaker and has more of an off-ball function). His assist ratio is 2.5 points lower than ball-hog chucker Tyreke Evans, and he ranks 57th of 62 among qualifying PG's. It's hard to justify many minutes at the PG position with those kinds of passing numbers.

He's caught right now in a little bit of an in between, which is why I keep saying he needs to make the Mark Price college-to-pro transition. But of course it's still early. I don't get why people get so wrapped up in making evaluations so soon in a guy's career.

Meh, he doesn't slash to create like Reke. He usually only dumps the ball into the post or swings it around the perimeter. And since Sacto is a woefully awful perimeter shooting team he's not going to get many assists.

Jimmer had a couple of great hockey assists in the first half. He made a great bounce pass from the baseline drive to Cousins at the top of the key who swung to a wide open guy for layup.

Does anyone keep track of that kind of stat in hoops?
