I think he handled the Matt Williams mind games nonsense pretty well this year, so I would expect him to be the focal point of the offense next year, probably in the clean up spot.

I'm pretty unbiased in this series. I wasn't really cheering for either team. I think the Nats got hosed a few times by some horrible calls. In game two I could not see how some of zimmerman's pitches in the 9th inning were not called strikes. He was obviously irritated by it. Desmond definately checked his swing last night but the home plate umpire didn't even check with the first base umpire and rang him up. Those calls did t cost them the series but they did t react very favorably to the calls and let it bother them too much. I will be cheering for the Giants in the NLCS though for sure

But they made a huge exception for Harper whom they gushed about. He's going to be a dominant force in the years ahead and the sooner the Nationals showcase his talent in the 3 or 4 spot the better (or worse, from the Giant's standpoint).

He's going to be a dominant force in the years ahead and the sooner the Nationals showcase his talent in the 3 or 4 spot the better (or worse, from the Giant's standpoint).

Nats scored 9 runs in the series -- Harper drove in 4 of them and scored 4 of them. Once his wrist/hand strength was back around August, he started absolutely murdering balls.

From Aug. 12 through the end of the regular season, he batted .305/.358/.503 with nine homers in 167 plate appearances and 40 starts. It was maybe tough to notice his resurgence given his earlier thumb-related issues and the fact the Nationals' playoff standing was all but wrapped up courtesy of the Atlanta Braves' collapse, but Harper was back, and the pitchers he faced were certainly made aware.

Not every young player is going to be Mike Trout out of the gate, and failure to recognize that has kept people from appreciating Harper for what he is and what he can be. Harper was the youngest player on the Nationals' Double-A team during his rehab assignment. He was the second-youngest player on the Nationals' High-A team. Including those rehab assignments, he's only played 139 games total in the minors, with most of his professional baseball education coming against the best players in the world in the majors. In spite of that, Harper is a career .272/.365/.465 hitter who already has 55 homers -- and four playoff dingers, a feat matched only by Miguel Cabrera, Mickey Mantle and Andruw Jones -- before he even turns 22. Just 19 players in history have logged as many plate appearances (1,489) as Harper has before their age-22 season according to Baseball Reference, and the ones with a loftier OPS+ than Harper (who ranks 11th even with his injuries) are mostly all-time names like Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Mickey Mantle, Mel Ott, Ty Cobb and the guy Harper will always be compared to, unfairly or not, Mike Trout.

Ring ceremony! Given that kneeling at the altar before God, angels and these witnesses predates any contemporary protocols, I think the author is mistaken as to which is the more "traditional."
