After a start in which he was benched because he was so lost at the plate, the kid is stroking the ball right now.

Matt Williams and his crazy lineup tinkering seems to be working.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

His lineup changes every night. It is freaking annoying. Not super impressed with Matt so far.

It will be the new moneyball if it works.

Was tonight his third different spot in the lineup in the just the last 3-4 games? Don't see that often.

What's his deal? I check the Nationals' boxscores a couple of times a week, and it seems he (still) has Harper all over the place after over three weeks into the season.

                • Current: Harper is the Nationals' best player, which makes Matt Williams' frequent demotions of Harper to the sixth or seventh spot in the lineup even more mystifying -- and is cause to wonder whether Williams is up to the job of running the team if he can't even identify who his best hitter is.

Harper has accumulated more WAR through his age-20 season than all but five players in MLB history; three of them are in the Hall of Fame, and the others are Trout and A-Rod. Only two players hit more homers before their age-21 season: Mel Ott and Tony Conigliaro. Only Ott and Mickey Mantle drew more walks. I think the backlash against Harper, in addition to lacking any rational basis, has obscured what a remarkable start he's had to his career -- and he has every facet required to get better as he enters his early 20s.

Future: Harper's "slow start" this year -- sensible minds call it "random variation" -- ended with a bang, and he's back where he ought to be at the plate. Harper's going to win an MVP award or two, with a .400 OBP/30-35 homer season likely to come in the near future. The speed with which he's been able to make adjustments to major league pitchers is what marks him as a superlative talent, on whom it's fair to hang projections of future best-player-in-the-league status.

I listen to the DC sports show most mornings and they have Matt Williams on once a week. They have asked him a couple times about it and his comment is that after the slow start to the year that Williams put him down in the lineup to take pressure off of him (I think he batted 5th though on opening day). FP Santangelo who does the color commentary for the Nats here on TV disagreed with the move, because Bryce is a guy who thrives in the spotlight and said that if you try and take that off of him, he's just going to press more to show you he belongs in the spotlight. I agree with that BTW. Williams also said a lot of his lineups are situational based on pitching and doesn't want two left handers in the lineup together (talking about Harper and LaRoche and to a lesser degree the switch hitting Espinosa). However that doesn't make much sense because Bryce is killing left handed pitchers this season which has been the biggest knock against him in the box.

To be fair it's not just Harper, a few other guys keep getting shifted around and it just doesn't make much sense to me. Span has been leading off, but Rendon should be with Span hitting down in the order around 7. Williams just seems to be overthinking things.

Williams was also brought in to help shore up the defense but he hasn't helped at all there as the Nats are terrible defensively. They've made a much of base running errors also. So far Williams is probably getting a C- as a manager.

It sucks that Harper is on the 15 day DL. Right when he seemed to be getting his swing together again for another hot streak. He's really keeping his hands inside the ball and taking it to the opposite field. It's a bit interesting that Williams also benched Harper for not hustling when Harper has shown a disconcerting penchant for getting hurt for what some have argued playing too hard.

                    • Here's an article about Williams curious treatment of Harper in the lineup from earlier in the month. It doesn't make much sense at all.

                      • DL again? Damn, this kid. And apparently some are worried it could be much longer than 15 days.

                            • Looks like he's engaged.

Hopefully we'll get to see him play baseball sometime again this year.

I'm glad Harper called out Williams.
