Because I simply haven't read anything that stated -- or otherwise implied -- they'd match at any cost. My impression based from what I've read/heard is that they'd match any reasonable offer, so if what you're saying is true, I was just interested in reading it.

That said, at the time I posted, Siler said the offer was most probably going to be 5 years at 5mm. I think that offer is pretty steep, but one the Jazz would have likely matched. Now that we have the exact details, we'll see what happens. My own vote would be to let him walk, and according to Siler that's the same initial reaction the Jazz have had. If Portland wants to pay 9mm for Roy's back up next year, let them.

So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

This Matthews offer is outrageous. There is no way the Jazz match. There is no way they should match. I'm perplexed. I cannot believe anyone would offer Matthews this much money. This off season is getting more and more depressing. But matching this offer would be even more depressing.

      Go Heat!

Unless they sign Fisher. That's about the only thing that could turn me against the Heat this year.

Come(s) across? Sloanhater is the biggest douche on any sports message board in any sport...and I'm a regular on uf.n and used to be on CB until guys like him made it nearly unbearable. He never has anything original to contribute and when challenged resorts to exactly what you've seen here.

Now, onto the Jazz. IMO they don't match and shouldn't. Paul Allen is insane BTW.

So, who will be on the FA market next summer? AK's contract will be off the books. How much cap room will we have?

Is Portland crazy? I don't understand that offer at all. I ain't going to lie though, I hope the Jazz match.

Not a great looking group. I really like Horford and would love to see the Jazz make a run at him, but dealing with RFAs is always tricky.

2 years in a row they make an offer just to try and screw the Jazz. We should have let them have Sap last year, and I think we should let them have Wes this year. If they want to blow up their cap and roster to prove they can get the Jazz let them.
Portland wasn't a joke until the last few months. Pritchards was fantastic as a GM, but Paul Allen couldn't stand the credit he was getting and freaked out and fired him.

I'm not sure that Batum has ever played SG for the Blazers. He isn't backing up Roy, he is the teams starting SF. The radio guys who said they shouldn't give up Batum for Chris Paul are morons. Batum is going to be really good, but I wouldn't hesitate to give him up for Paul.

I would much rather see the Blazers giving the backup SG minutes to Bayless.

Now this is a conspiracy theory:

I have a friend who worked for the Blazers for several years who got canned last year. According to his friends still in the organization, the Blazers are hoping to sign Matthews to finalize their deal with the Hornets for CP3. The high initial salary for the first year is so the salaries can match up.
So the background story goes, for those who don't know Paul Allen has cancer, and entered his second round of Chemo. He has been told, he has tops 2 years and close to around 1 year to live. PA wants more than anything to get CP3 and win a championship this year. Apparently, KP told him he was unwilling to sell the farm to get CP3 and when talk trades were hot and heavy, the Blazers advising Dr. reviewed CP3s knee records and told him it was a no go. KP told PA he wouldn't do the trade so he got the ax. The Hornets want Batum, Bayless, 3 future 1st round draft picks, Oden (one year left + needed for salary) and Matthews which the Hornets like. Portland would also pick up Posey. The numbers work and makes somewhat sense if CP3s knee really is messed up.

My friend has been wrong before. He told me all sorts of crazy trade ideas that he though would happen that never did. I know of two other people who have confirmed PA's health situation and also said that once he dies, his sister, who is the apparent heir to the throne along w/ Vulcan, wants to sell the team/ move it to Seattle. Winning a championship would increase the value of the team so his cronies are all for it.

Take it for what it's worth. The Hornets could very well pull out of the deal or the Jazz could match the offer. Anyways, I thought it was interesting and worthy of sharing even if nothing comes to fruition, which I don't think anything will.

You still have nothing inside, you now have 5 wing players and your PF plays like a wing and a 40 year old playing the point.
If the Blazers stay healthy, they win more games next year than the Jazz.
