WTF kind of shot was that by AK?

2004, late December game. Same situation, Jazz down two, plenty of time for a shot. Andrei launches a deep 3 that barely hits iron.

Sometimes he's pretty dumb.

But how about that Maynor kid? Smooth with the ball, can score around the basket and he's pretty good at finding the open man. That last tear drop over LeBron was beautiful.

If anyone but Matthews could have hit a 3-pointer, the Jazz might have won this game. 3-12 from deep, Matthews went 3-3.

I have already given Maynor his props in this thread. That kid looked good in the pre-season from what I saw. Though I thought it was a silly pick, it was probably a great one given that they'll need a PG when DWill leaves.

Matthews is going to stay in the starting lineup when Deron comes back tomorrow night. Sloan says he's leading the team in the new defensive stat they team is tracking.

I think this is a good move. Brew and AK just aren't a great combo.

Stoke. I'm glad they recently discovered the ONE stat that will solve the Jazz's defensive problems. I'm equally glad that the solution is Wes Matthews.

What defensive stat? How can there be a new stat? We've been playing basketball for decades.

Maybe stat is not the right word, but the Jazz are tracking what they call "perfect possessions" instead of their typical "deflections."

A perfect possession is the ultimate goal. For the Utah Jazz it is the goal on the defensive end this year. Yesterday at a season ticket holder chalk talk Tyrone Corbin shared with a loyal Jazz audience that the coaching staff has introduced the “perfect possession.”

The perfect possession means all 5 players fulfill their defensive responsibility of rotating, help and playing as a unit. Hard as it may be for many players often the correct defensive move is to leave the player you are assigned to and help with another player. This takes the ultimate trust. Trust that your teammate is going to do the same and cover your man. In turn, the Jazz will also grade each individual player on each possession.

This season the Jazz coaching staff will be relying on unsung video coordinator Jefferson Sweeney to go through every defensive possession and grade each player on whether or not he fulfilled the defensive perfect possession. During the off-season Sweeney remarkably went through EVERY Jazz defensive possession of last season. While all individual defensive numbers are being kept in house the overall finding were amazing.

The Utah Jazz had perfect defensive possessions 28.8% of the time last year. 80.2% of those perfect possessions the Jazz allowed no score and no free throws.
This season Sweeney will go through every play of every game immediately following the game. The team and each player will receive a grade for their defensive performance. The daily print out will include each players grade for the last game and their grade for the season.

Their will be no hiding this year in the Jazz locker-room. No one will be able to claim they are playing defensive. The daily print out will reveal all warts and show all stars.

Seems to be working out so far, the Jazz defense is worse than it's been in years.

Honestly this a change I would like to see in the starting lineup. Fes, Booz, Brew, Matthews, Deron...that's a much better defensive group than what we've seen previously.

The funny thing is, Deron has established himself as one of the best PGs in the league, while Maynor looks like a natural scorer. IOW, if they are going to play at the same time, it seems like an obvious fit to have Maynor at the 2.

Last night it looked they were playing pretty interchangeably. When they were both on the floor it was basically 50/50 PG/SG for each of them. Took turns getting the team into the offense, creating and acting as an off-ball scorer.

Maynor is a nice looking player. Definitely needs some mass, but that will come.

Was it really only 5 months ago that you were so disappointed with Maynor as the Jazz's net result of the draft?
