  • My favorite part of the hire is Greg Miller having to act like he thinks it is a good idea after all of the little digs and obnoxious comments he's made towards Karl since Larry died.

Only problem is that G. Monson will say it was his idea
Interesting timing. Horny said yesterday he would make Mail an offer to join his staff in Phoenix.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Par for the course...Jazz being reactive instead of proactive. What is this I hear about a 3pt line in the league?

        • "Miller admitted the genesis of Malone becoming a coach dates back to a highly publicized feud the two had in 2012."

          • These are the things you do, along with getting rid of wasted vets in front, to motivate the young ones.

Derrick Favors' reaction to Coach Karl Malone? "He was ecstatic," his agent, Wallace Prather, said. "He hopes to be on that level some day."

If Malone teaches the young bigs one thing, I hope he teaches them how to draw fouls like he did back in the day.
              I'm like LeBron James.

              • Keep riding him to mediocrity, and keep employing the coach that thought it was the best idea. From CNNSI:

"I do not envy the coach and general manager tasked with building around so strange a player as Jefferson. He's one of the better high-usage post scorers around, but inefficient enough in that capacity to hold his team back if given too many touches. He's also a blinding, neon advertisement for defensive liability; opponents know all too well at this point that Jefferson's slow feet and poor reads make him exploitable in pick-and-rolls, and often look to target him specifically until his presence on the floor becomes destructive.

Jefferson, 28, put up some strong raw numbers as the first option in a top-10 offense, but his massive defensive weaknesses and curious offensive game make him difficult to complement. Ideally, Jefferson would need a front court partner capable of playing elite defense and stretching the floor on offense -- a dream combination that's almost impossible to find. Jefferson's offensive game also doesn't mesh all that well with the high pick-and-roll style that forms the basis of most offenses, and needs the aid of perimeter shooting in order to fully breathe."

                • Jazz now at 10 in Future Power Rankings. Warriors went from 19 to 4.

The Jazz peaked in the last edition of FPR, rising all the way to fourth, largely on the strength of a very favorable salary cap situation. While that situation remains positive, it looks a little less favorable to our larger panel this time than it did nine months ago -- several teams have moved ahead of Utah in cap space.

Utah drops two spots in Players given the uncertain futures of Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson and Mo Williams, who can all leave this summer. Derrick Favors, Gordon Hayward and Enes Kanter provide hope, as do two more first-round picks (Nos. 14 and 21) in the upcoming draft.

The front office remains a strong suit, with long-time basketball operations chief Kevin O'Connor still in house and giving over the GM reins to the well-regarded Dennis Lindsey, formerly of the Spurs. The panel has less faith in coach Tyrone Corbin, however.

With a core of interesting young players, multiple draft picks and cap space, the Jazz remain a top-10 team in our rankings and look well positioned to succeed for the rest of the decade.

                    • Reports out that Houston has made it known they want to trade Thomas Robinson to clear more cap space. They obviously won't want any salary in return.

Isn't this a total buy low moment? He only makes $3.52 M. He obviously hasn't shown he can do anything well yet, but he was also drafted into the hole of Sacramento, and then Houston acquired him with no plans to incorporate him into their roster last year. I wonder if they don't even want draft picks in this year's draft. No sense moving Robinson's $3 M only to spend $1.5 M in the draft. Tomic and next year's first for him?

                      • Marvin Williams will undergo surgery to repair his sore right heel/Achilles tendon.

Williams is expected to need approximately six months to recover.

Williams has a player option on his contract for the 13-14 season, which he is now certain to exercise.
Guess he won't be back until December or so.

                        • How exciting that we get to look forward to more Marvin next year. He's always good for a triple couple. A couple of boards, a couple of fouls, a couple of points, a couple of turnovers.......................................

                          • SALT LAKE CITY — Ever since he shocked the basketball world in 2011, Jerry Sloan's name has popped up in rumors and reports for a multitude of NBA coaching positions.

Portland, Charlotte, Milwaukee and so on.

Add another possibility — one much closer to home — to the mix.

The Utah Jazz have had a preliminary discussion with Sloan about returning to the fold in an unspecified position.

                            • We've got to move on from the Jerry Sloan era of coaching, and that means not hiring him back and that means not keeping anyone here who worked closely under him, like Corbin.

We need someone who has never worked for the Jazz here.
