  • Interesting interview between Lowe and Favors. Lowe starts hitting around some of the criticisms he's made of Corbin's PnR approach and his analysis of Favors' game. I've read all Lowe's ideas on this stuff in various articles, so it's kind of fascinating to see him asking the player about this stuff directly, almost suggesting alterations based on his own ideas. Favors also says he regularly beats Enes in midrange shooting contests. I find that hard to believe.

So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

    • Earlier today Kanter donated 50+ tickets to an upcoming game to kids in foster care.

      Good dude.

              • I am loving this season. Games where Hayward and Kanter play well, and the team ultimately loses, are great. I know it was against Boston, but Elder Hayward had a monster line tonight.

I'm not. I'm fine with the losses but the quality of the play is even worse than I expected and I think I already expected them to be worse than most people did. Boston was winless going into last night, fielded less talent (without rondo) and still looked leagues better in executing plays. The jazz play unwatchable basketball right now. Just as a basketball fan it's almost offensive to watch them.

The biggest issue IMO is that the Jazz have no point guard. We all know Tinsleys limitations, and the dude wasn't even in training camp so he can't be in basketball shape. JLOLIII was the shocking signing of the offseason, and he is downright awful. I honestly can't think of a worse 2-man PG rotation since, well, Captain crunch Milkshake Palacio and Jetwindex87 Keith McLeod played ahead of Deron Williams. And honestly, those two were probably better than what we have now.

The silver lining is that Trey Burke is at least on the roster. Who knows what his ceiling is, but I think everyone can agree he's not going to be any worse than JTins or JLOLIII. I think that once Burke is back, the quality of ball will improve offensively, even though I think the Jazz will lose a lot if games especially as Burke gets up to NBA speed and gets used to playing with his teammates.

Phoenix probably fielded worse talent, especially once Dragic didn't return. Philly has some good talent starting right now, but like Utah has zero bench. Both of those teams are 3-2.

It sucks to see other teams in tank mode with young talent playing the majority of minutes and coaches in their first year, seemingly having a better idea of what they should be doing on the court than Utah does right now.

That being said, bad teams with no depth just aren't going to win on the road in the NBA, especially on a back-to-back, even if that 2nd game is Boston. And Utah's two home games thus far have been competitive losses to two of the best teams in the league. Once Rush is in shape, Marvin is back, and Burke is starting at point, I think the Jazz will be much more pleasant on the eyes.

                      • The good news about this team looking so utterly incapable of simple basketball plays is that the Jazz will have no choice but to fire Corbin. If this team met or exceeded expectations, I could definitely see them talking themselves into another year or two of Corbin.

While it does lack some of the veteran leadership of the 03-04 team, this team is probably more talented. A good coach would have this team winning 30 games or more. With the deepest draft in a decade approaching, I'm happy the Jazz don't have a good coach. Maybe Trey Burke will make all the difference in the world, but I have my doubts.

                        • Next game is against Chicago? Ouch. That one is going to get really ugly. Chicago is 1-3 and just got drilled by Indiana. That will probably be the game Rose actually makes some shots.

How many games in a row would Utah have to lose to get Corbin fired? 0-6 after Chicago, followed by a back-to-back in Toronto. Monday night could be an NBAtv game of two winless teams when Denver travels to SLC.

Define "all the difference in the world"? I guess my allusion to Burke returning was that they'll be more watchable, not that he's going to turn Ty into a coach. I don't think that is the case, and I fully expect Ty to be shown the door at the end of the year. I'm just not sure there is a Popovich disciple that Lindsey has waiting in the wings to bring in and coach the Jazz.

The comparisons to 03-04 is interesting. AK was more talented than Hayward at this point, but Hayward has a much more refined offensive game. Favors and Kanter are better low-post scorers than anyone on that team (I can't even remember who our bigs were outside of Jarron Collins... Borchardt? Humphries?) and Burks is an intriguing prospect. But the PGs that year (Mo, Ro, Lo) have such a huge advantage over what we have right now (JLOLIII and Tins) that it almost swings some of that momentum back to 03-04.

Either way, this years team will not win 41 games.

I'm feeling pretty confident Ty is gone at the end of the year. Lindsey is completely taking this thing over, and Ty is not his hire. He lets him ride out the tank and then ditches him.

I don't know that Burke will make all the difference in the world, but he'll help in two areas. The first is that this team's shooting is effing dreadful. Paint is packed like those days when Brewer was playing SG and it's impacting the bigs (Favors more than Kanter, because Kanter has the better one-on-one skill and Favors needs a little more space to use his explosion). We have one competent shooter from the perimeter, and that's G-Time. But we don't get to use him for spacing because he's first to play-make and handle so much because of how bad our PGs suck. Get Burke and Rush back and then you have three guys out there that can shoot (Burke in theory anyway) and you can use Hayward as a spacer in addition to handler.

Second, as Lowe has recently and I said last year, Favors has considerable upside in the two-man game, and he has no real point to run it with (though he and Hayward have some chemistry at times). He's clearly more that type of player than Kanter (who you can dump the ball into and ask to go one-on-one more) and you need a good point to take advantage of that type (Nash and Amare, who was never the same w/o Nash). Trey was a terrific PnR player last year in college (arguably the best) and hopefully that translates some.

Obviously Burke has pretty much sucked in the summer/preseason minutes we've seen him, but I think ultimately he'll still help as he starts to adjust.
