One could assume that Charlotte also adds a player via free agency. However, their GM is on record as saying that his rebuilding project is long term, and he is not going to overpay for a free agent right now to help him win a few more games next year. I can't imagine Sloan being on board with their GM's strategy of developing young talent regardless of whether they give you the best chance to win in a given night.
But, based on your earlier post, you are assuming that Sloan would do what Sloan does rather than working with the GM on his rebuilding project. Which is why there is no chance they hire Sloan. When Cho interviewed for the Job, he asked Jordan if he was ok with losing a lot of games and developing youth rather than trying to win as many games as possible. Cho joing the team because Jordan agreed with him. I can't imagine Sloan wanting to sign up after having that same conversation with Cho.

I agree that it is unlikely. I said as much in my initial post on the subject ("That's about the worst way to rebuild, of course"). Jerry is an old dog and the idea of rebuilding is a new trick. At least for him it is. In that sense, it would be a terrible fit.

That said, I stand behind my belief that Jerry could coach that roster (assuming they get Davis) to 35-40 wins in the East. That would put them in contention for the 8 seed.

Here's the crazy plus-minus stat of the playoffs: Utah was minus-1 in its 116 minutes with Favors on the court in the four-game demolition by the Spurs, and minus-63 in the other 76 minutes. His impact was so obvious that the Jazz started him in Game 4, producing their only near-win, and one surmises Game 3 will be the last time he comes off the bench for a very, very long time.

The 20-year-old is still coming along offensively yet had double-doubles in Games 3 and 4, but his real calling is at the defensive end. With his size, athleticism and mobility, he has a chance to be a defensive player of the year down the road. In the short term his playoffs will have a different impact this offseason, because it makes it almost certain that the Jazz will trade one of Millsap or Al Jefferson to make room for Favors in the lineup.

Chad Ford now moving Dion Waiters into his top 10 at 8. I really hope the Jazz can get into the middle of the round if we don't get lucky with the Warrior's pick. I think there are going to be a very solid couple of players in the middle of the round at a guard or wind i.e. Terrence Jones, Lillard, Marshal, Rivers, Teague, even Wroten.

NBADraft has Machado going after the Jazz pick in the 2nd round and Ford says he's got a "legit shot" at the 1st round. IOW, Ford considers him a potential 2nd rounder as well. I still don't get why people aren't higher on this kid in a PG depleted draft (Ford ranks him 6th among PG's in this draft). Shot the ball well, racked up dimes (almost 10 a game and an a/to ratio north of 3), decent size, good athlete, etc. He would be a great get if we could snag him with our 2nd round pick.

Also, I know Tyshawn Taylor is a total knucklehead, but I also think he could be an interesting pick with that 2nd rounder since the Jazz could give him time to continue developing PG skills and not have to play him right away.

I agree with the post. I'm a huge Marshall fan and like him better than Machado, but not by much. I think Marshall is a top 7-11 guy and Machado is probably anywhere from about 12-17. If you could get him in the late first or second round, that's a no-brainer.

Also, I'm not as convinced as most that the Jazz need a "shooter", but if they do, I agree that both Kentucky's Lamb and Jenkins would be excellent and should have long careers in the league.

With a relatively small chance of Utah landing the pick, it seems like a smart move to receive additional considerations now in hopes of having the pick come over in 2013. But if GS ends up with the 8th pick and makes a strong selection, and then Curry and Bogut stay healthy next year, the Jazz could be receiving a much worse pick and lose a year in developing a new young player.

I like the idea of relaxing the protection on the pick considerably in 2013, especially in terms of what that could mean for that pick in terms of trade value. But I don't think that alone is enough to lose a shot at the 8th pick this year. I wonder what is being discussed...move protection to top 3 in 2013 and send the 5th pick in this year's 2nd round to Utah?

Relaxing the protection in '13 doesn't seem like much to me. I don't think the protection is really going to come into question next year. And getting cash would be lame.

They do have the last pick in the 1st round and an early 2nd rounder this year. I think getting something like that would be better than reduced protection or cash.

Yeah I'm thinking the same thing, and then they will have less incentive to tank if there's injuries with less protection.

The trade value of the pick would go up though, because teams would be almost certain that they'd be receiving a 2013 pick. I think it would make it a much more valuable commodity this off-season, before games start and we see if GS would be on pace to hand over a late lottery pick.

I don't remember where I seen it, but there was a scenario where the Jazz could give up the pick this year to GS, so then they could acquire the San Antonio 1st round pick (27-30th pick range) and the future pick would have less protection.

After that is done, the Jazz trade the San Antonio Pick and the future GS pick to get a pick from New Orleans or Portland who have 2 picks, so basically getting a top 10-11 pick by giving up that 30th pick. I think Kendall Marshall has to be on the Jazz's radar at the 10 range.
