I'm the first to admit, +/- stats have to be taken somewhat with a grain of salt - which is to say they are no more important than, say PER, FG%, rebs, etc - but doesn't it have to say at least a little something when Burks leads the team with a net on/off court +/- of +41.6 and Roger, who is essentially taking minutes that should all go to Burks, is last on the team with -35.6?
Corbin really needs to pull his head out, at least on this one issue.I'm like LeBron James.

+/- is one of the worst statistics out there. It bugs me that ESPN and others use it so much. There are plenty of other reasons Corbin needs to pull his head out of his ass and play Burks though.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI'm the first to admit, +/- stats have to be taken somewhat with a grain of salt - which is to say they are no more important than, say PER, FG%, rebs, etc - but doesn't it have to say at least a little something when Burks leads the team with a net on/off court +/- of +41.6 and Roger, who is essentially taking minutes that should all go to Burks, is last on the team with -35.6?

I read it about it here and over on CB, but I think Corbin deserves a bit of a break. Every game it is the same thing. '(Player Name) should be playing more minutes than he is. Total fail by Corbin.' I have to say that I am a bit surprised and impressed that the Jazz sit with a 4-3 record. Yes, he is making mistakes in some of his player rotations...but for a first year coach (not really counting last year's second half), the Jazz seem to be improving.
I want to see Favors more. I want to see Raja less. But so far, I can live with some of these mistakes. Hopefully the Jazz can remain competitive in a season where their rookies and second year players are averaging a good portion of minutes for the team.
The numbers so far in minutes per game:
Favors: 23 minutes
Hayward: 26 minutes
Kanter: 14 minutes
Burks: 12 minutes
Raja: 18 minutes. And yes, that is 18 minutes too many

I don't disagree with your overall point about giving Corbin a break, that for the Jazz to be sitting at 4-3 is pretty decent right now, but giving Roger as many minutes as he does and playing Favors as few as 15 minutes, those are unacceptable, inexcusable, no-brainers. For as long as he continues to make those two boneheaded moves, I, for one, will continue to rip him from my chair on this message board - and I bet he just hates that.Originally posted by UteStar View PostI read it about it here and over on CB, but I think Corbin deserves a bit of a break. Favors not getting minutes is the fault of Millsap and Jefferson playing well (trade Jefferson if you ask me). Moving Millsap to SF is not effective too often either, and doesn't space the floor very well either if at SF.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI don't disagree with your overall point about giving Corbin a break, that for the Jazz to be sitting at 4-3 is pretty decent right now, but giving Roger as many minutes as he does and playing Favors as few as 15 minutes, those are unacceptable, inexcusable, no-brainers. Raja getting 18 minutes is too much, but I went to the game in the lower bowl last night, and Raja did play some nice defense out there I thought, while it didn't merit 18 minutes, I thought he did some things besides scoring that were OK. The thing is about Raja, is that CJ Miles is playing probably worse. Yeah CJ is getting his points and Raja isn't, but CJ takes a bunch of shots and does it in an inefficient way to get them, Raja doesn't shoot much. CJ's D isn't helping, and making stupid fouls and a bunch of turnovers isn't helping either.Last edited by UtahJazzFan88; 01-07-2012, 03:54 PM.

To be honest, Kanter and Burks are both playing more minutes than I thought they would early in the season. (Of course, that was before the horrific start that made me think we might as well play each 30 mpg). Corbin was helped out on the front line with Memo getting moved, otherwise Kanter wouldn't be playing at all.Originally posted by UteStar View PostI read it about it here and over on CB, but I think Corbin deserves a bit of a break. Corbin to me seems to be in pleasing mode right now. Surely he wants to win as many games as he can, and I think that is genuinely what the Jazz front office wants. But no doubt Corbin knows his long term employment in this current position hinges on some of those young kids developing at the same time. So he's playing everyone. He can do that under the guise of keeping the team fresh in this tough schedule, though I don't entirely buy that explanation. If that had more truth to it we'd see Jefferson and Millsap playing fewer minutes.
Howard is looking better. Is that going to mean fewer minutes for Burks, or Bell/Miles getting squeezed? That will be telling for me in my early opinion of Corbin because from my limited exposure to that trio, even if they were all the same age it would seem Burks is more productive and comfortable even as a rookie with very little practice time with his teammates.
But for me, it all boils down to Favors right now. He is clearly the most important piece for the future of this team, and he needs to become a far more valuable part of the present. He put in the work and his game has clearly improved. He was given the starting nod, then had it pulled. Then after he played great in another start, he was put back on the bench. They've said he needs to play better without fouling and he's done that. Hollinger and Ford have talked about how Utah has a chance to be the next OKC, showing drastic improvement quickly. But the rate of change is going to be slower if Favors' minutes are restricted. And since it isn't as if he's playing behind Bynum and Gasol, I can't see why his minutes should be at 15 last night or 22 on the season.

I'm not sure where he would be on the Jazz draft board this year, but I continue to believe that Harrison Barnes is going to be a better pro than he is a college player, and he's looking pretty damn good right now at UNC. He came into today's game hitting 49% of his 3's (taking 2.6 attempts/gm) and went 3-4 on his way to 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals in only 25 minutes.
Golden State really needs to start winning some games.

Hayward playing very well. Still having fouling issues but shooting with confidence."Either evolution or intelligent design can account for the athlete, but neither can account for the sports fan." - Robert Brault

Raja with his 2nd offensive rebound of the season and he actually hit his first two shots. So far the energy has carried over in a silent Oracle Arena. Weird stats: Favors has no assists on the season and the Jazz had no turnovers in the 1st quarter."Either evolution or intelligent design can account for the athlete, but neither can account for the sports fan." - Robert Brault
