  • WTH? Are the Jazz not doing film review again? I thought it was some kind of break through last year, when it seemed Sloan finally relented and was using film review for the first time in 20 years. Now we get this:

    tribjazz
Williams again said Jazz are dealing with too much info and he wants to simplify things.

    tribjazz
Williams said he wants the team to watch game tape together. He's brought up before, though, and it hasn't happened.

    tribjazz
Williams on simplifying: "That's up to coach. I don't run practices. I'm just out here to try to keep guys together."

    tribjazz
Williams on watching game film with team: "It'd be nice. That's one thing I've talked about in years past."

    tribjazz
Williams was then asked who he's talked to about it: "It doesn't matter."

    tribjazz
Williams gave the same type of response when asked about sitting down with Sloan to discuss simplifying things.

    tribjazz
Williams: "I just don't know how much good it's going to do.

Greg Miller: Coach Sloan has our complete confidence. He will not be run out. He will decide when he wants to leave.

Deron is rumored to be looking for a home in Southern California. I just started that rumor.

He already has one. San Diego. And they have an up-and-coming team there.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

        • When Stock and Malone left, did anybody think that Sloan would still be around 7 years later? I know I didn't. Maybe his time has passed, and it is now time for Jazz fans everywhere to start feeling Horny.

          • I'm pretty sure we'd see Corbin before Horny. Maybe Horny comes on an as an assistant.

Is Sloan afraid of relying on tendencies through film study or is it simply he thinks it detracts from on-the-court practice? Has the question been posed to Jerry recently?

Seriously. There isn't any maybe about that at all. I think Sloan is a hell of a coach. I really do. But I don't think he's the coach that takes a team all the way. I think the game has long passed him by. On the other hand, he's a known quantity and you know what you're going to get with him.

Really though I think it's a matter of tempering expectations. Is Utah a title contending team? No. Will they ever be? Not likely. Utah had one of the best duos ever. Stockton and Malone are probably top 5 at their position all-time and they couldn't even win it all. What do Jazz fans really expect out of this roster? Could another coach do more with this talent? Or could another coach keep Deron happy and in Utah?

It's a tough thing to consider. And I am not trolling. Utah has had a hell of a run. A historic run. But a middle of the pack playoff team is pretty much the ceiling for them. So do you remain content with that and Sloan? Or do you blow things up and start over with the practically fruitless hope that someone else can do something that no one else has been able to do in Salt Lake City?

"No one else has been able to do in SLC"...because so many others have been given a shot at making it happen.

I'm just glad we've been able to make HFN feel comfortable in the Jazz thread after only 2 games this season. I'm sure he's loving the Sloan chatter.

Blow things up? I meant everything. Front office, coaching staff, and player personnel. I think KOC is great. But he's as consistent as Sloan. And I don't think much of Miller the Younger.

By no one else, I meant everyone that has been associated with the team, not just Sloan.

2 games in the season or not, I have been beating this drum for years. I have no interest or stake in the Jazz at all. Just trying to give an outside perspective.

I think a lot of Jazz fans would do well to adopt Goatnapper's approach to BYU football.

                          • Is he saying these things after the loss last night? The loss in which he threw the ball at a teammate? Sounds like Williams is pretty unhappy with the organization from top to bottom.

I think everyone would be wise to start following LiveCoug's lead.

                            Time to panic.

All fair questions, but I think you have to consider, what is Utah's ceiling as a franchise even if you blow the whole thing up? I think Jazz fans need to be more honest with where they stand in the NBA world: this is a big market league. In the decade prior to Stern, you had something like 7 different teams win championships, including some smaller markets (Portland) and small-to-mid size markets (Milwaukee, Seattle, etc.). Enter Stern, and this becomes a player, not team, driven league. The individual wants to become the biggest reflection of themselves possible, and that means big cities with more potential $ and media attention. The top talents start rejecting teams like the Charlotte Hornets because they can only become the next mega-star in LA.

In the 30 years since Stern, you have what, 7 or 8 teams that have won championships total? And almost universally major market. LA, Boston, Detroit (though they were the closest to the old team-driven model), Chicago, etc. Only one small market team has won a championship in 30 freaking years (basically my whole life time, for crying out loud!), and that's SA, which basically caught lightning in a bottle by drafting possibly the only top-tier star that didn't demand mass attention (maybe OKC can do it again).

With Stock and Mail, you thought it was possible, because they were so close. But the Jazz beat the odds to even get there by making two of the greatest picks in the history of the league. Since their departure, I've never even thought to pretend for a second that the Jazz stand a legitimate chance of ever winning a championship. The way the league is structured is stacked against them, and on top of even that, it is simply one of the least desirable NBA markets in the league. I really think the franchise's ceiling is mid-tier playoffs, and the floor is considerably lower. I'm as much for change as the next guy, but you pull this thing apart and I think the odds are much higher that Utah is a future NBA bottom-feeder than legitimate title contender.
