With Jefferson on board, Utah will be at $57 M in committed salary even if they just let AK's deal expire (that is assuming Miles and Koufos get their $3.7 M and $2.2 M options picked up). Even though I'd love them to, I just can't see them bringing back multi-year deals during this season in exchange for AK's contract.
The light at the end of the tunnel is the fact that next year, Okur's deal morphs from albatross to trade value as it enters the final season. So the team could let AK play out the season with Utah, maybe see how he does with some extra minutes at the 4 while Jefferson logs minutes at the 5, see what Koufos and Fess possibly become, and then let his deal expire. Then the team can explore options of bringing AK back at a lower salary, moving him in a S&T, or sending off Okur's expiring deal.
With them over the tax already with 9 guys under contract, at the very least Utah is going to be paying the big payroll, several million in tax, and not getting the tax payment from the league. I think they'll sit tight this year, see what Hayward/Jefferson/AK do, and then if options are available for a significant improvement next off-season that will put them more into the tax they'll take that chance then.

I didn't know they could back out of an offer.Deal breakdown: Jefferson to Jazz
...
What it does likely mean, however, is that Wes Matthews is headed to Portland. I can't imagine Utah matching the Blazers' offer sheet and swallowing the luxury tax hit. They may also choose to pull Fesenko's qualifying offer, since that extra $500,000 could really matter when it comes to tax avoidance.

Here is what happened. KOC went to Greg Miller about Mathews crazy deal. Greg told him to see what else was available before next Monday. KOC went back to Greg with info on Big Al Deal. Greg liked it with the understanding that this plus Brewer, possibly Harrington, would be the 2010/11 Jazz. Sloan still wants Mathews back.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostI am going to wait to hear SloanHater's view on this before commenting.
Thank you cards should be addressed to Dallas, who despite needing a legit post player wouldn't settle for a Dampier/Jefferson swap, AND the Blazers for making such an absurd deal the Jazz looked elsewhere. A gift basket should be sent to Greg, who is proving to have better basketball sense than his dad.
I said no way Kahn makes this deal. Desperate and dumb are understatements in describing him. He could have much greater value at the trade deadline.
Jefferson is a great replacement for Boozer. I worry about the knee in the Jazz's system, but he's young so hopefully it won't be a problem. It's too bad Korver isn't around. He would have thrived playing with a Jefferson/Millsap combo.

Ha. That's the best we can hope for in Utah, and as long as LA's in the conference, even that is probably not possible. The Jazz, however, are the big story here. They've kept the window open on the possibility of the Deron Williams era producing a conference championship. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.
