Neither Hayward or Evans got a stat in the 1st quarter. KOC got us some impact rookies once again.

Maybe the gifted FTs will help.

Looks like KOC drafted a grand total of about 320 pounds.

Just when you think the FO isn't going to do anything, they have an ace up their sleeves.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

So he made a 6 pointer, pretty awesome. I've seen guys play entire careers and not do that.

Hayward isn't a bad player. Looks like maybe a late first round pick who can play. He just isn't the guy I was wanting with the precious Knicks pick for the last 5 years.

For me, none of the guys available at 9 were. I think a lot of Jazz fans failed to shift their expectations back from where they thought we were going to be picking all these years to where we actually ended up picking.

                  • Various summer league conclusions I've seen over the years:

                    - Deshawn Stevenson is a future star
                    - Greg Ostertag > Tim Duncan
                    - Deron wasn't worth the #3 pick
                    - Brook Lopez is a bust
                    - Everyone whiffed on Marco Belinelli, he's a scoring machine
                    - And on and on and on

You'll forgive me if I don't draw any major conclusions from summer league play this year.

Actually, DeShawn was never very good in summer league. Nor was Ostertag.

I'd say at least 80% of the guys I've seen dominate summer league have turned into impact NBA players.

I've never seen a guy suck in summer league and become a solid NBA player. Sure, it isn't the be all end all in terms of evaluating future success, but it isn't completely worthless either.

Right, but there were better options than Hayward there. And if you insist on Hayward, at the very least, you trade down and take Hayward in a later slot.

Deshawn made the all-Revue teams in '02 and '03, averaging (I think but haven't checked) somewhere close to 20 per game. A lot of people talked about him being the best player in the Revue at the time.

Tag outplayed Duncan (Tag's 2nd year, Duncan's 1st) in their first meeting, and boy did that have people jumping to conclusions. Tag was going to break out, Duncan wasn't worth the #1 pick, blah, blah, blah. The big talk was about how "Tag dominated Duncan," though that's clearly a matter of persepective -- at a minimum, he did out play him: http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/pos...-of-tim-duncan

It's just summer league. I don't think it's worth putting much stock in.

Hayward was gone at 10, but I think trading down (assuming you could actually do that, which I don't in fact know) would have been the smart play. Overall, I think Babbitt, Hayward and Henry all looked like similar prospects, and if the chance was there to get one maybe a little later plus an extra pick, I definitely would have done it.

                            • Just watched the game at lunch. The only real disappointment I had with Hayward was that he didn't take the last shot. He was clearly the best player for the Jazz on the court, he could have easily pulled up for a jumper at the elbow or taken it to the rim to try to draw contact. To kick it out to Gaines at that point was a silly play. It was fun to watch him be a decoy for much of his time on the court. Gotta love the Jazz continued strategy to get guys who won't get a look from European teams as much action as their first round picks.

Augustine > Koufos. KK has clearly been working on his guns more than he has his game. That is a guy that should fully be expected to dominate the lane and glass, a 7', 260 lb big man entering his 3rd year in the league. Bigs may not get the ball enough and in decent enough positions to get a good read on them offensively in summer league, but KK still looked lost on way too many possessions and wasn't anywhere close to the physical presence he should have been.

I thought Augustine looked much better than Koufos, too. I also would have liked to see Hayward take that last shot and I bet he will in subsequent games.
