  • Now multiple sources saying the max offer sheet from Cle is not forthcoming, with Amico (connected to Cle well) saying it is "greatly exaggerated". One other source tweeted that Suns are reaching out to Hayward today to talk numbers.

So I'm guessing Lindsey leaked rumors of the max offer, so when he gets Hayward for 4 years, $55 M it will look like a discount.

I just can't get myself to believe that anybody would really offer G-Time the max.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Not after 30% from 3. But Eric Gordon got the max the year after he played under 10 games. And wall got it even though he'd only averaged playing 60 games/yr, didn't have a jumper, and hadn't shown he could run the team very well.

It would be the max any team can offer, except the Jazz.

Crazy. I hope its not true. I'd like to keep Gordon. If it is true then its time to look at a S&T to Boston, if interested. Boston would have to offer similar money as Cavs, but Jazz take back whatever salary Boston wants to dump and Jazz get Smart (probably wouldn't trade him), and/or Green and/or next year's 1st.

Green might be nearly as good as Gordon, and all of a sudden $9m per year for a mediocre player doesn't sound so bad.

I'm assuming Hayward would rather go to Boston than Cleveland.

Hoping Jazz get him for 5 yrs 60m or so.

Some people thought Gordon was a top 3 SG in the league the year before (maybe that was just Bill Simmons). And Wall is John Wall. Gordon doesn't fit into either of those categories. He probably is worth less than Gortat (*all-star, plays center), except Hayward has the age advantage.

The year before Gordon's injury was 2010-11. So back then, you still had Brandon Roy, Joe Johnson was much younger, Andre Iguodala was a 2way SG and his peak, Kobe/Wade/Manu were all ahead of Gordon. But he had shown he could score, and though he was coming off a bad injury, he was still young. So what he had going for him was he had produced, was young, was a top 7 player at worst at his position, and was a top level free agent that off-season because Garnett, Duncan, and Deron weren't going anywhere.

A similar kind of circumstances could be true of Hayward, especially if the Miami 3 don't move in free agency. When teams build up cap space and then can't land the big fish, history has shown many of those teams will still spend that money.

The Cavaliers will not make a contract offer to restricted free agent Gordon Hayward, according to USAToday's @sam_amick.
Who bows out next, Phoenix or Boston?

                • Any team that pays Hayward the max is crazy.

How do some of these GMs get their jobs? Wow

If I’m the Jazz, I let Hayward walk at 15 mil per year. That’s ridiculous.

It’s better to acquire a bunch of young talent and try to flip that for a star versus paying someone like a star who clearly doesn’t fit the bill.

                  There goes cleveland being cleveland.

Maybe they’re trying to stiff the Jazz cause of the Boozer thing.

This is what happens when bad teams are under the cap.

Signings like this is what will cause the next lockout. Or teams could stop doing unbelievably stupid things.
Some reactions from Cavs fans from earlier in the day.

Boston bowed out by paying Avery, right? Toronto just signed Lowry for 4 yrs 48. Fine. Looks like 5 and 60 for Hayward, or less. That's what better players are getting.

Love that Lowry deal. Two second tier FAs getting $12 M per. Following the contract Utah gave Favors last year. Maybe the promise to match really is going to scare teams off.

Perhaps, but that just seems too easy if you're a team with a RFA. Why would you ever not promise to match? Then, if everybody is promising to match (because it makes too much sense), why would any team ever make an offer to a RFA? I guess the rumors that the promise to match is scaring teams off just isn't adding up to me.
                        I'm like LeBron James.

I certainly don't think Lindsey giving a soundbite at the start of free agency makes any difference at all. But I do think a team's interest in a player made known to teams, via trade talks and other conversations, over an extended period of time could let them know they'd have to be way over market value to have a shot. I read somewhere yesterday that teams know they pay about $2 M more annually for a guy if he's a RFA and they want any shot at him. If Cleveland knows Utah really likes Hayward and they're going to have to go to the max to have a shot, I can see where an continued insistence that a player isn't going anywhere could at the very least delay an offer until teams have looked at other options before tying up their money in a RFA.

Then again, we need not suppose that this is a rational and efficient market and that Hayward will get paid based on the value Toronto or Washington got in their signings.

                            • I haven't heard any rumors on Chandler Parsons. I'd guess he already worked out an illegal deal with the Rockets. But what's the market for him? Why wouldn't the Jazz give him a 4 year $40m offer sheet? Really screw with Houston's plans, and if the Jazz got him, he'd be a very trade-able asset, would replace Hayward if the price tag is too high, or could play with Hayward. He might not agree to sign with the Jazz, but someone should have signed him already.

Or, he's being smart and waiting for the dominos to fall with Lebron and Melo. There are enough teams that think they can sign those guys that are going to be disappointed. Parsons will be able to get at least $10M per from one of those teams that lose out on those big two given his age and skill set IMO.
