At halftime, they interviewed Steve Cleveland. I guess he's been a mission president the last three years. He said when he got home, he couldn't believe how tired he was. He looks like hell. Poor guy. Anyway, he said on the bench for BYU sitting out was someone who might later be known as "the best point guard to ever play for BYU". I must have heard that wrong. If not, who was he talking about? Bryant?
Braiden Shaw looked like a little boy standing next to Yoeli Childs. When you're a 22 yo RM and your dad's 42" suit falls off your shoulders, then just go ahead and quit sports.

Let me make sure I understand that correctly. Steve Cleveland said about Elijah Bryant that he could be the best point guard in BYU history? I was thinking he was the fourth option at point this year, but admittedly I don't know anything about him other than his previous stats. Cleve must know something to make such a bold statement. Should we be excited?
My thoughts on watching a scrimmage yesterday for about 20 or so minutes:
1.) I think BYU has a plethora of good basketball players.
2.) I think TJ Haws has the skill set to be a good PG at this level. I also think that one of the most humiliating things future opponents are going to have to emotionally come to terms with is having "The Ginger Mamba" destroy them. Red haired, freckled, skinny and prematurely balding....not to mention a youtube video out there I am sure of him breaking down into tears when his older brother began their religiously mandated cultural coming of age event. I can think of nothing more ignominious than watching that kid tear apart my team, but alas many will have to find a way to come to terms with it over the next few years.
3.) Yo-LEE is a good basketball player who will be a good player at this level. I don't think it will be this year. I don't think he will start over Davis due to foul trouble and issues of inexperience. Unlike most years at the BYU there is probably not the compelling need to learn with Yo-LEE while Yo-LEE is on the court. BYU can afford to not throw Yo-LEE into the fire this year and let him earn his minutes. I do think that when the time comes that Yo-Lee has, in my best John Houseman voice, "earned" 20+ mpg it will be well with the BYU.
4.) Payton Dastrup is also going to be good. I would prefer to see him redshirt this year but he won't. I doubt he gets more than 10 mpg this year just due to his inability to play more than 2 minutes with any sort of effort. Saying that you can definitely see the glimpses of athletic ability and basketball ability that made him so highly touted. However, much more than glimpses you see his ability to play the game just destroyed because of him just not being physically ready. I hereby emphatically declare that he is the most improved player of the 2017-2018 Team!
4.) Leifson/Beo: I am less than convinced about Leifson being a replacement for Zac Seljaas this year or any year. My prediction is his career peaked yesterday. I think Beo will be a decent contributor off the bench as a combo guard for BYU. I liked what I saw and I remind folks that Beo was/would have been fairly well recruited if not for verballing to BYU so early. He will be no Ginger Mamba, but I think he will not be a liability on the court.
5.) Davin Guinn: Better than Cusick and Zilstra. Still I would love to figure out some formula that tracks how legitimately good BYU is by the minutes Guinn gets. The closer to 0 his mpg get the higher BYU's probability of winning a game in the NCAA tourney gets. I have been here before and I have seen it before...to quote the great John Bon Jovi: Only the names have changed. Guinn is not a total liability but the reason BYU did not win a tourney game some years is because a guy named Sam Burgess or Ben "You Gotta Come and See Us" Murdoch started or played significant minutes for BYU. Guinn is just not going to be good enough to play significant minutes on a team that will win an NCAA tourney game. He is no Michael Lloyd or Chuckie Ab-ooo-wow. He isn't even Stephen Rogers. Nice kid with a good physique that even a flaming heterosexual like myself can enjoy.
6.) Aytes looks better but I see no significant role for him. Minutes early for this team as the younger kids learn to not foul and BYU coaching staff prays Dastrup can get into shape. Minutes decrease as season progresses but I do see a strong role for him next year backing up the Yo-LEE. I don't think he will be a liability when he is on the court and I do see some good moments for him in his reserve role that will hopefully help him to see that sticking it out through the injuries was worth it.
7.) Kyle Davis is what he is. So is Braiden Shaw.
8.) I would really like to see LJ and Elijah get healthy and on the court. I am skeptical Elijah will meet the hype but I am convinced he and LJ getting 20 mpg puts Davin Guinn closer to that number of mpg that will enable BYU to win an NCAA game.
The future is the brightest it has ever been for BYU hoops. That is my totally serious opinion.

Not since I did not follow the advice of my older brother and buy a tube of KY Jelly before my wedding day has there been a greater disappointment than what I sense BYU fans who buy this Elijah hype are facing. I think LJ Rose will run the point along with TJ this year. Now of course, there is a very high probability that LJ Rose might be hurt most of the time. I am really interested if TJ runs the point when he is on the court with Elijah and LJ is on the bench. So far the entire time I have seen TJ play there is no Elijah or LJ so TJ always is running the point - which I think he will be rather good at in time.

I'm definitely taking a wait and see approach as it relates to Bryant, so I'm the wrong person to comment. But apparently Cleveland loves the kid. Based on what I saw last night, BYU needs him to be pretty good though. You can see Haws potential, but he doesn't look quite ready to be a big time college basketball player.
I don't expect him to be as great as The Man, They Myth, Matt Montague, but I hope he'll be good.

Speaking of the LJ hype did you hear Coach Clevelands comments about him. Could become the best BYU point guard ever?
I really like Cleveland, but I value your opinion more. What do you think?

What injury was Mika suffering from and will it keep him off the court for long?
"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

He wasn't talking about LJ, unless I completely misunderstood. though I don't think I misunderstood since LJ Rose is a senior - if he's going to be the best, he's already the best and has only one year to make his legacy.
