I listened to 1280 this morning on the way in. They said that today is the last day for everyone at 1280. It did sound like there may be some changes after the fact, so I don't know if they fire them all so that their contracts are void and then rehire them at more favorable deals or what. But why would you buy a station just to fire everyone?

Wouldn't it just be cheaper to boost your own stations radio frequency to reach more listeners than buying a rival to wipe them all out? What would stop them from just starting a new station somewhere else? Unless 1280 was hemorrhaging money, this just seems like a really wierd move on both sides.

My understanding is that 1320 didn't own their station, they leased it. Now they are buying 1280 (maybe for the same price as they could have purchased 1320?) and eliminating the competition in a single blow. Seems like a good move.
It would be typical for all the 1280 employees to be fired and then the new boss can decide who to retain. But in this case, they probably won't be using the same studios, so it is not like moving into a brick and mortar business after purchasing it.

Also, I believe there are FCC regulations and licensing that control signal strength. It is probably easier and cheaper to buy a bigger station in order to increase your signal.

Looks like I'm done listening to sports radio in the morning. It is a damn shame that OC, Hans, and Gunther are losing their jobs. Those 3 did a really good job.

I haven't been listening. Gunther is gone but Jan is being retained?

The assumption is that all 1280 guys are gone and replaced by the 1320 guys. funk is merely excluding Jan as one of those who did a good job and should stay on the air.
But nobody seems to know exactly how things will work out. I'd suspect that the Jazz will want to retain some of the talent from the old 1280.

I actually think that Jan does a decent job. Unlike most Ute fans, I really don't have a problem with him. However, I think the 3 that I mentioned are the big losses.

Looks like Hans will now be on Kall 700, I presume with Bill Reilly.

                  I'm ok with that move.

That should bring a few more BYU listeners to the Ute flagship radio station. Good call by Mr. Checketts.

Sounds like Jake Scott and Monson are staying, everyone else is gone.

                      6 to 10 AM - DJ & PK
                      10 AM to 1 PM - Bags & Parks
1 PM to 3 PM - Jake & Scott Garrard
3 PM to 6 PM - Spence Checketts & Gordon Monson

I wonder if KALL will expand to a 2nd show or just have Bill Riley & Hans together.

I think that the Checketts/Monson show will be a train wreck. Those two are polar opposites in personality and have nothing in common. I just don't see those two getting along. Oh well.

Thank goodness Bags & Parks isn't during my commute. I can see bad things happening with the CheckMon Happy hour.

Really? I haven't listened to Checketts much so maybe I'm wrong, but I see their show failing for the exact opposite reason - they seem a little too similar to me - both kind of negative energy guys. That can work in radio but you usually have to have a guy take the cheerleader role to balance things out.

I'm having a hard time putting Hans and Riley together. Riley's a pro, but Hans doesn't really convey that feeling, IMO.
