New 1280 lineup...

Back in the day 1280 was KNAK and 1320 was KCPX and they both played top 40. ANybody else remember Skinny Johnny Mitchell's nighttime show on KCPX? He once swore at me on the phone, but that is another story.

If they are going to go back in time and bring someone back, it needs to be that Ian guy who was on 1320 for a while. He had some great connections to some very good guests. And I enjoyed most of what he had to say.

Thanks to an iPhone app I like, I will listen to 1280 mainly, and sometimes 1320, in the mornings while working out. During football and basketball season it was interesting because of coach interviews and the like, and of course games were happening every week. Lots to listen to and think about.

But once those seasons were over it's been practically all Jazz all the time. The other problem is that most of the hosts are a little short on talent. Hans almost sounds like an amateur, OC is better. Gunther sounds like he's still in college and in a frat party, and Jan J. is not really cut out to be a broadcaster. I haven't listened to the guys on 1320 much, but when I do I am struck by how much more at ease they are on the air and how professional they generally sound. I can't say much about 1320's content but PK and DJ are easier to listen to.

Monson is lazy and arrogant. He talks about "news" that is often several days old by the time he gets to it, and he's often uninformed - about matters he could easily read up on by going to message boards like this one. My guess is that listeners will come out a bit ahead after the merger.

This is because none of them graduated with communications degrees. Wait.......Gunther may have. I think Gunther is good. You're right, he has a little bit of that frat party thing but I find it entertaining. Jan has made great strides but....he is the weakest from a DJ perspective. From a football knowledge perspective he belongs right near the top.

The 1320 guys are almost all communications/broadcast journalism guys. There's a reason they come off more professional. However oftentimes their takes aren't as good.

I always thought Jan's brother was a natural when he subbed on 1280.

Not a big fan of the stations merging, now we have more stations that are owned by the Jazz, personally like the independent voice over one that's owned by an organization but LHM owns everything now lol.

DJ & PK should be kept, I like the show despite PK trying to be funny and not being funny at all, kinda annoying but PK is pretty good when serious.

I hope that they keep some of the former atheletes.

The 1280 guys are great to listen to when it rolls around to college FB season and they can share their inside perspective on Utah and BYU. I would assume that as the years pass their insider info will become less relevant and their number of connections might dwindle with staff and player turnover. (Although it does seem that Hans has still been able to maintain connections.)

When I listen to sports radio I listen to 1280 more than 1320, and am more likely to listen during FB season.

Although I think it reflected badly on Boylen (the ball didn't go in the hoop), I still love listening to the audio of Boylen putting Monson in his place after the loss to BYU a few years ago.

I include Checketts because he has some good connections and he will talk soccer. Jake Scott really isn't too bad either.

I do fear that the afternoon drive show will be 90% Jazz talk. I like the Jazz and all, but I would like a little more of a mix than the current 1320 gives me.

I'm not a big soccer fan, but I think it is kind of hilarious how no one else at 1320 even mentions or acts like they know anything about soccer besides Checketts. Checketts is usually talks about soccer for a little bit every other day and Scott Garrard doesn't even act like he cares about it. Checketts has done a good job from getting people from what I've noticed, I noticed that he had David Stern, Jeff Van Gundy, a few other big guys on the show that nobody else probably would.

Re: soccer, it may be that the larger portion of the audience, like me, will change the station as soon as they start talking soccer. Checkets has a vested interest in his Dad's trust, so it makes sense that he'd talk about it.

That he's on 1320 at all is nothing short of remarkable given the history of the two families.

They are all terrible. I agree with Indy...I've never listened to sports radio, anywhere, that is as bad as it is in the SLC market.

I think its kind of a bummer they are merging. I like 1280's independence from the other stations loyalties. The BYU representatives on 1280 really aren't that great. Jan struggles. I wouldn't be sad if Hans or Jan were gone as long as there is a solid BYU homer in the mix to replace them. I really liked Alema Harrington when he was on 1320. Monson is a bit condescending and nay-say-ie for my tastes. I do like DJ a lot though.

Also, despite how bad Jan can be I really like having a local voice during the mid day. I really can't stand Rome or any of the ESPN guys.
