BYU had, (and I'd imagine still does in some form) tryouts open to students wanting to walk on. I had a roommate go through the process. He said they split them into squads of 5 (imagine that) and ran quick scrimmages. He said nobody wanted to pass because the games were so short, and there were so many people trying out, that the only way to get noticed was to shoot. There was a cut list after that day and he didn't make it so I don't know what happens in round 2. This was back in the Roger Reid days.

Edit: these try outs took place well before the season started. I think it was early in fall semester but it's been a long time.

But normally the open tryouts are before the season. My guess is Utah had something similar back in September as well. I don't think it is the norm to have an open tryout halfway through the year. IMO Krystkowiak is trying to shake things up. Not to worry he is a coach at Utah and while they don't hire big time coaches, they make them!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

You beat my edit. Yes, these were early in the fall.

Looks like Coach K is a genius. The response has been incredible. People lining up all over campus to try out

This is why I think it's some weird symbolic ploy. They already have a list of guys who they could bring in if they needed someone. They probably already call them in to practice once in a while--I had a few friends do this under Majerus. To act like you're having some open tryout in the middle of the season? Just silly.

I like Coach K more and more. I hope he has a long and fruitful career for you guys.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Yes, Gabe Kaplan is the lead starring actor in Fast Break. Now name the NBA superstar who also starred in that movie.

It's been forever since I saw that movie. I don't even remember an NBA star being in it, but my guess, without looking it up, would be Dr. J.

Maybe John Wayne Cullen can play the 4. He's a tall dude. He'd probably commit a lot of stupid fouls, though.

In college I had dinner with Robbie Benson and his wife. He was good friends with President Smith, who he had met in South Carolina. Very nice and very quiet guy. Also very short.

Bernard King. I know this only because of my son's encyclopedic knowledge of the NBA from a certain era. I don't even remember Bernard King.

Great scorer whose career ended early 80's with a horrific knee injury. Played for the New York Knickerbockers. Or maybee it was the Nets.

Does anyone remember that TV movie featuring Robbie Benson in which he plays that drug addict teen? I remember two things about it....the final scene in which Robbie Benson is freaking out with scissors, trying to get his dad to shoot him and the secret room Robbie Benson had in his closet. It was hidden behind some crazy ladder or something and he would go inside and do drugs and listen to wild music.

While I never thought much of the drug angle, I always thought it was really cool that he had that secret room in his closet. I wonder how his parents never knew that their house had a secret room behind that crazy ladder.

He played into the 90's. I remember having a Skybox card of him in a Bullets jersey. He played for a couple teams.

Uhhhhh dude, Robbie Benson played "Billy Mills" in "Running Brave." Kid won the 10,000 at the Olympics in Tokyo in 1964. Great knowledge of athletic accomplishments of Native Americans. I'll bet you are the type of guy who thinks only the Ute Tribe considers the drum and feather a significant spiritual symbol. Oh yes we Utes are so politically correct...We get the Ute tribe to sign off on the drum and feather we are so doggoned considerate and noble.....Billy Mills, remember the name!
