Honestly, I don't see anything to be hopeful about other than the incoming freshmen. I said before the season that god forbid if we didn't see hopeful signs from our three freshmen this season. Well, it's happening. Matthews has one field goal THE ENTIRE SEASON. Odunsi had that one 14 point game in a blow out loss, and hasn't scored more than 0-4 points in any game since. There isn't anything consistent, but there have been moments. The effort put out at home against BYU was a positive. They obviously don't know how to take that on the road or be consistent with it.
I don't think it's fair to blame K for any of this. He took over when the recruiting season was over and all but 4 players had left. He's still an unknown especially since he's had few seasons of college coaching.
This is someone's fault, though. And the obvious candidate is boylen. This is what he left; his legacy. The palyers who transfered left because they had bad times at Utah. I was going to say Boylen was like a cancer we had to excise. But he was more like ebola, that jungle disease that liquifies your organs and causes you to shit them out. I see that none of the Boylen apologists are taking any vinidication from this. We can see that even if last season's team would have remained intact we'd be bad this season and facing this kind of apocalypse next season. Giacoletti left something to build on; we now see he left a hell of a lot compared to how little it is possible to leave. Then we caught ebola.
I agree with Majerus that Utah is a tough state to recruit to in basketball. Let's just say basketball a bleu state, urban centric game. I think Jack Gardner benefitted for being revolutionary or ahead of his time in recruiting blacks, while Jackie Robinson was excluded form MLB, and Kentucky, the rest of the SEC, Texas, etc. were excluding them. Then after the recruiting competition got tougher, Pimm and Majerus were really really good coaches. It's not an accident that utah and BYU have had these horrendous teams while the rival has excelled. If there is a disparity in coaching including recruiting acument, the outcome for the unlucky program can be horrendous. Slim pickins. It's worse where Utah's or BYU's coach is bad in comparison to Weber's or Utah State's coach.
This is why the Pac 12 is probably even more important for future success of basketball. It gives us a recruiting advantage within and outside.When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
