  • Andy Katz on the Utah job

    • Utah is likely to go with a more established name with its next hire as it begins Pac-12 membership after dismissing Jim Boylen. Some early names that will likely be involved in the search: Saint Mary's Randy Bennett; LSU's Trent Johnson, who was an assistant at Utah and head coach at Nevada and Stanford; Old Dominion's Blaine Taylor, who previously coached at Montana and was an assistant at Stanford under Johnson and former Alabama coach and current ESPN analyst Mark Gottfried, who was an assistant on the UCLA's 1995 national championship team. If Utah AD Chris Hill looks at assistants he should look strongly at Duke's Steve Wojciechowski. He's ready to be a head coach and his wife is from Utah. The Pac-12 has already turned to a Duke assistant in a head coaching search with Johnny Dawkins at Stanford.

Utah is still a very good basketball job. Rick Majerus wasn't the first to prove this point and he won't be the last. The fan base is extremely passionate about the team, and as the football program has proved, it can compete at a high level for a sustained period.

"Passionate" does not mean "will turn out in large numbers for unwatchable basketball." Pretty simple.

          • I think Gottfried or WoJo would be the best coaches.

Utah knocked off Gottfired's #1 ranked Alabama team in the 90s I believe.

Katz is a MWC honk from his days as a beat writer for the Lobos. He always has good things to say about the MWC teams and schools.

              • I have always liked Larry Krystokiaviakiai. I would be solidly behind that hire. I think Gottfried is an interesting choice. I hate the waiting, but lets hope that Hill finds the right hire.

Nah, that just means he knows what he is talking about.

                  • Good sources can confirm a couple of potential candidates:

Dan Monson (Long Beach State) - This might be a year early for Dan. He feels that his club at LBSU will be “Gonzaga Special” next season and would love to be at the helm for a run in the NCAA. Pac 10 is his dream conference. Biggest regret of his coaching career was backing out of the Washington job to stay at Minnesota. Unlimited connections in California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. He will have no issues recruiting the in Pac 10. Age 49.

Tim Miles (Colorado State) - I spent several years working around Tim during his time at North Dakota State. This guy brings excitement to any program. Winning the NCAA has been his focus since the beginning. He knew early in his coaching career that each step was only a stepping stone to the big prize. During his time at NDSU he passed on several opportunities with larger conferences and paychecks waiting for the best opportunity. He passed on a declining program in the CAA and landed in the MWC the next season. MWC to the Pac-10 is the next step for him unless a Big 10 or Big 12 opportunity presents itself. Give Miles an interview and you will want to hire him. Age 44.

My son, our first child, was born a few hours later.

I will not soon forget that game.

I was in the hospital and they didn't have ESPN2 or whatever channel it was on. No radio for it at OHSU.

I relied on family to give me updates.

It was a good 24 hours for me.

                          Good memories.

That game was the beginning of the end for Gottfried. It was a slow deterioration, but hsi teams began underachieving from that point, whereas they had been on the uptick before that.

If you ask Bama fans they will tell you that he was never the same after TR Dunn left in 2002. Gottfried brought in a ton of talent and recruited very well, but didn't always seem to know what to do with it (i.e. Gerald Wallace being the sixth man and shooting corner threes).

Still he would be an interesting hire.

Made the Elite Eight the following year. We can't take credit for starting Gottfried's slide at Bama.
