Jackson Emery: 13.6 pts, 40% from 3, 45% from the floor, 94% from the foul line, defensive player of the year, 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. 33.4 minutes per game.

DJ Gay: 11.6 pts, 3.6 assists, 33% from three, 34% from the floor, 62% from the foul line.

How does number 3 make it over 2. I can see the argument for Gary but how does Gay make it over Emery. That is without looking at the head to head numbers.
As if it's not obvious at this point but the MWC is akin to children's sports nowdays. Everyone wins!

Forget that the best backcourt players in the MWC reside on the same team, let's give it to Gay!

By personal defender was he meaning "on-the-ball"? If so, I would have agreed with him at the end of last season. For all the steals and stats, Jackson was a step slow, laterally-speaking, up through last season, and he was fairly easily beaten off the dribble (or "off the bounce" as our resident east-coast analyst would say). But I think he has made significant improvement in this respect since last season, and I've been pleasantly surprised. He's much better at anticipating the drive and getting in front of his man this season (though perhaps the dearth of m2m defense we've played this year is skewing my perception).

I still think ShAb-Wow's OTB defense is superior to Emery's, but that's not to say Jackson isn't a very good OTB defender these days.
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Definitely agree with this. In fact, our guard line's inability to limit dribble penetration is #2 on my list of biggest tourny concerns right behind our only serviceable "big man" going 6'8"/230.

I think he has started using his quick hands and feet to good effect in man defense and his ability to cover space has always been great off the ball. Jax is easily the best off ball defender in the MWC and this year has become the 2nd or third best on the ball defender because of quick hands and much better lateral movement.

Really good interview. I didn't know his parents were both Utes and BYU snagged him.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

                • Nice little ditty in ESPN the Magazine today about BYU. It was the style issue and they had some college BBall styles represented like Notre Dame's Burn Offense. Anyway, they had BYU's Quick-Change D and how they rotate between zone and man to confuse offenses. They talked about Emery as one of the best defenders in the country even better than Dogus Balbay who many consider the best on the best defensive team in the country.

                    Yeah, that was good.

I like when Bill Simmons says he thinks BYU sounds like a great place for his daughter to eventually attend college.

When they kick guys out for having sex, I must agree. Makes my job much easier.
                      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

                      • Just read through most of this thread. SU thinks we are about as good as Air Force during AFs really good years. Jimmer hit his ceiling last season, we won't win any tournament games, we won't win the conference, etc.

Also remember you can pre-order your 2010-2011 BYU basketball highlight videos over at the bookstore.

Where are the Utah dan posts that say that BYU has to make the Sweet 16 for the season to be a success? I know they are around here somewhere.

I don't think White is a better prospect than Martineau over the next two years. My guess is White is asked to go on a mission.

Martineau took one shot last night. Miss.

In fact, at the end of the game, Rose had in my nightmare lineup...martineau, zylstra, Magnusson PF, and Big Game along with Rogers. Yikes. Even in garbage time that lineup freaks me out.
