With the returning players: Hall, Knell, Saunders, Baker, Stewart and Fouss I think BYU has a good core. Nobody that is flashy but that six alone could give you 5 decent players good enough to be in the playing rotation of most teams after the top 20. In that group are 2 players (Baker and Fouss) who have averaged 13-15 ppg in D1 hoops and 3 more (Hall, Knell and Saunders) who have hovered right around double digit points. Further, I think Hall and Saunders both are poised to make decent jumps from last season and develop into "good" college players. Some injury concerns with Baker's foot and Fouss seeming to struggle to always stay healthy but a decent core there where I think 5 players good enough to be in the rotation on a team good enough to potentially make the second weekend and certainly good enough to make the NCAA tournament.

With the transfers you pick up a great defender in Mawot Mag-I know BYU has these highly touted freshman for next year but I believe that nobody on the team does anything as well as Mawot Mag defends both at the 4 and against wings. That is something a really good team can build upon while he is on the court. Further, while his 3 point shooting might be suspect he still averaged 9 ppg in the Big 10. I am a fan of the Keiba pickup as well-he is a great athlete and had moments of brilliance at times for the U. He can rebound, defend the rim, run the court and get some trash points on putbacks and via pick and rolls. These two together with the 6 returning players would definitely be a team that I think has a floor as a solid bubble squad and then depending on health and development of Hall and Saunders could even be a solid 8-9 seed.

Finally, we have the addition of the incoming freshman. The highest recruiting class BYU has ever had. All 4 are probably good enough to get minutes as true freshman and 2 might be legitimate 1 and done capability. I think if either Catchings or Demin can be that type of FR player- scoring 12-14 ppg then I think BYU could be good enough to win a game or two in the NCAA tournament. I expect Demin one Catchings to be given every opportunity to develop into that 1 and done they are dreaming they are. I expect Crawford to play as a back up to Hall. I think it likely that Kozlowski doesn't get a lot of minutes as a FR-but I really think that might be an indicator of the depth and talent this team has. Most years a FR of his capability would play and play a lot.

From the outside I like the mixture of returning maturity and experience, the roles the transfers can play for this BYU team and how their pieces improve the whole and the potential of star power and development of the incoming FR.

Or it could all blow up in KY's face but he has experience coaching "pros" and that is what many of these kids are.

      • Now that my previous player-whose-game-I-love-to-hate has left the team (sayonara, Khalifa), I have to pick a new one. I'm going with Trey Stewart.

Yes, he's a nice guy, local guy, an RM, and has his clothing company: https://www.defaulthappiness.com/about, but those things don't matter a lot on the basketball court.

He's got little to no offense:
        • On a Points per Game basis, Trey had 2.2 PPG, ranking 11th out of 15 players. He was lower than everyone except Marcus Adams, Townsend Tripple, Jared McGregor, and Tanner Hayhurst.
        • On a Points per minute played basis, Trey was even worse. Clocking in 14th out of 15 players, beating out only Tanner Hayhurst.
        • His FG% ranked him 11th out of 15 on the team. The only only other player on the team with appreciable minutes who had a worse FG percentage was Khalifa.
        • His 3Pt% was abysmal at 26.1%, 11th out 15 again, beating out only Townsend Tripple, Atiki Ally Atiki, Marcus Adams, and Tanner Hayhurst.

"But scoring isn't supposed to be his focus. His job is to be a ball handler and distributor", you say.

Great, let's look at his assists and turnovers, hallmarks of ball handling and distribution:
        • His APG of 1.1 was 8th out of 15 players on the team, tied with Richie Saunders.
        • His Assists per minute was better - 6th out of 15 on the team.
        • His Assist to TO ratio was 8th on the team.

If his role is supposed to be a ball handler and distributor, he was a pretty solid "meh" this past season.

"Oh, but he provides great defense", you say. Well, let's take a look.
        • Does he get many steals? SPG is 8th on the team. SPM is actually his best metric, in third position on the team although the two leaders in the category are Dawson Baker and Townsend Tripple. I would basically say Trey Stewart is the best on the team on a steals per minute basis.
        • What about defensive rebounds? In DReb/Min he's 6th on the team, beating out Richie Saunders (good grief, Richie) and noted rebounding luminary Aly Khalfa.

So, defense is clearly his strongest suit.

And that sums up Trey's game: no offense, meh-to-subpar ball handling skills, and decent defense. Sorry, but I don't think this warrants a roster spot - especially after 3 years in the program. In my opinion, there are better options out there.

        Flame away!

        • Trey by all accounts is a fabulous human being and a great teammate, and I suspect you will have pretty much zero opportunity to hate him, as he will rarely show up outside of mop-up duty.

I guess you can hate him for taking a roster spot, but isn't there still have one unfilled scholarship? So it doesn't appear that he is really keeping anyone off the team.

Completely agree that he is not a good player. I am guessing that he will be deep on the bench this coming season and will only see time in garbage minutes with a couple of other preferred walk-ons. I can't wait to see the jokes when the starters exit and our TRIO of bench players:

            TREY Stewart
            Townsend TRIPPLE
            Conner TRIPLETT

enter the game. When they come in, they need to shoot nothing but three-pointers.

              • I may change my "player-whose-game-I-love-to-hate" depending on how all the new arrivals pan out. (Note Clark, that I didn't say I hate Trey the person - just his game. Maybe I should phrase it as "player-whose-game-I-like-to-dump-on" so people don't think I hate the person?)

If they had stayed, Atiki Ally Atiki or Waterman might have got the nod. But they are now gone so the role fell to Trey. We'll see if someone steps down and takes his place in the coming months.

OMG that schedule is incredible. Home games against Arizona, ASU, Cincinatti, Utah, Baylor, Kansas, K-State, OSU. The only marquis teams we don't play at home are Houston and Iowa State.
