Crazy how everything reversed in Europe. We are in trouble right now but many countries in Europe have significantly higher daily new infections per capita than the US. Even Germany who were held up as a model for so long are basically even with us on new infections.

Most of Europe is at significantly higher latitude than the US, and thus their flu season hits full swing a bit before our's does. Might that be a contributing factor?

Question for those of you that are much smarter about this stuff than I am. I was looking back at the timeline of the H1N1 pandemic. I don't remember much about it--I was in law school at the time and didn't really pay much attention to the news. It looks like several H1N1 vaccines were approved within about 4 1/2 months from the first known U.S. case and made available to anyone that wanted it within about 8 months. How did that happen so quickly? Was the approval process accelerated? Or was the process just easier (and less scrutinized) because it was a flu virus?

No scrutiny was need because it was a minor variation of a previously approved process.

It was the technological equivalent of changing a production line to paint the cars Gray instead of red.

Perhaps? But it seems to be crushing all latitudes in europe. Italy and spain are on fire. Worst countries are 2-3 times daily new infections the us is experiencing in our current spike. And some of the hardest hit countries are ones that went through the most stringent lockdowns to beat the first wave and have very high compliance with mask wearing. Its all very discouraging.

It’s lockdown fatigue. At least anecdotally it seems Europeans are tired of being locked down so they are going out and not always wearing masks. Call it selfish, but they’ve realized they likely won’t die from getting sick so they are living their lives. Sounds familiar.

I predict that the number of students going to college will drastically decrease. The kid down the street who should have been a senior this year, attending prom and starting on the basketball team, is graduating earlier in January and already has a full time job. He is bunking with 4 other seniors, all of whom are forgoing their second senior year and are working full time - they are all renting an appt together. When your school experience is nothing but online zoom, I dont blame them for getting on with their lives. And if college is more of the same, I'm thinking these high schoolers will all do vocational work and dispense with Studies in Feminism in Post Modern Century and other such college degrees.
