Spain is going on lockdown, and France is closing nonessential businesses.
European numbers from the John Hopkins dashboard:
Italy - 21,157 infected, 1,441 deaths
Spain - 6,391 infected, 196 deaths
Germany - 4,585 infected, 9 deaths
France - 4,480 infected, 91 deaths
Switzerland - 1,359 infected, 13 deaths
United Kingdom - 1,143 infected, 21 deaths
Norway - 1,090 infected, 3 deaths
Sweden - 961 infected, 2 deaths
Netherlands - 959 infected, 12 deaths
Denmark - 836 infected, 1 death
Belgium - 689 infected, 4 deaths
Austria - 655 infected, 1 death
Weird. The further you get from the Med, the fewer deaths. That might be that COVID-19 has more recently infected some countries (like in Scandanavia), but Germany has the third highest number of cases, but has only 9 deaths. I wonder what is going on there. Is it genetic?
As for the U.S., 2,951 infected and 57 deaths (2 percent morbidity). Obiously we have no idea how wide COVID-19 has spread. Once we see more testing, I expect the number will spike. Hopefully the death rate will mimic Germany more than Italy. The next two weeks could get pretty scary in the U.S. if deaths spike.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Yes, I think number of tests has to be a large part of it. Also, what are the age demographics of the populations in each country. I've heard Italy has a bunch of old people, for example.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostSpain is going on lockdown, and France is closing nonessential businesses.

I cant find numbers on Germany's testing anywhere, which has to be a factor. Also, when comparing the numbers as you do, I think you need to adjust them for population (per thousand or million).Originally posted by myboynoah View PostMediun Age

Health condition may be more important than median age. For example, 24 percent of Italy is a smoker, and worldwide 6 million people a year die from smoking. Nick Beard there needs to be total transparency. We need to know complete details of every mortality. We don't need to know their names. We shouldn't just blindly be following WHO's pronouncements. For example, 24 percent of Italy is a smoker. Similar in France. How important is this? I am not a doomsayer, as you know. But as people start losing their jobs en mass, there will be massive demands for facts and social unrest and the governments will have to be more sophisticated in their approaches. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Considering Germany's numbers once again, their smoking rate is 30.3%.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostHealth condition may be more important than median age. Obviously, there are other secondary factors at work. In addition to having an older population, Italy is economically much weaker than German and Korea. This could impact health and healthcare. There are also cultural factors.
The latest research suggests the 1918 flu was no worse than a bad seasonal flu outbreak, but secondary factors associated with WWI including squalor, crowding and malnutrition greatly increased the mortality. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
