At what point did you / will you take the coronavirus epidemic seriously?

My extroverted daughter is failing all her classes and has 25+ absences (spread across different classes). We are looking at transferring her to a private school that is doing in person.

Meanwhile, our governor just announced a soft Stay at Home 2.0 order.

I'm sorry to hear that. My wife and I (and my daughter) are all introverts. Poor kid was born into a boring family. It's been a bit of a learning curve for us on meeting his needs. I would be doing the same as you if the public schools were forced closed.

At this point it's hard to take seriously any proclamation that the teacher's unions have anything but the teachers interests in mind. I love teachers. My mom and sister were/ are teachers. But never should the interest of the teachers come before the students. At this point, I am vehemently opposed to all public employee unions (sorry Frank). They are a cancer to our public institutions.

Our governor has been in bed with the teachers’ unions for so long that he doesn’t remember where his **** stops and their ***** starts anymore. Lots of harm to helpless, innocent children being done in the name of “safety.” My children haven’t seen a classroom since March. I should be posting in the “What is wrong with California?” thread . . .

Up here a few hours north, my daughter has been going to school 5 days a week for the past month. The whole school is doing that. So far no issues. They have had a cold run through the class and we even got my daughter tested after she had a sore throat and ran a fever for a day, but she was fine. The school is tiny, 150 kids K-12 so they can make it work.

Where my other two go to school, they are going two days a week for the past three weeks and loving just going. A few cases here and there, but the school has managed it well.

I hope your kids can go back at some point. Mine are super happy just to have some normalcy.

Our school district just switched things up starting with the second quarter. All middle and high school kids will have online school on Mondays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, kids assigned to Team 1 attend school in person while Team 2 kids do online school. Team 2 kids attend in person on Wednesdays and Fridays while Team 1 kids do online school.

K-5 students are in class every day.

My kids have been in school since basically the second week of the semester. Everything has been fine. We've only received one email from the middle school of one case. That's it.

The first cruise ship to begin taking passengers in the Caribbean was supposed to be a watershed moment for the cruise industry. They did all kinds of testing before letting anybody board. Now they have five Covid cases and the whole ship is under quarantine. At least there are only 53 passengers (it's a small ship that can hold 112). None of the crew has tested positive.

There is no way I will go near a cruise ship in the next few years. (I was on one in January.)

even if the current companies die the assets will live on and the industry will survive. If the industry goes to full liquidation look for private equity to swoop in and buy up the assets for pennies on the dollar.

I don't want to get on a cruise ship that holds 5000 people either. Several of the more recent ones that I've taken were closer to half that.

Spending the time on the cruise ship is not why I go. It's to visit locations that I've never been to before. Last January I went on a two week cruise to New Zealand. Now I understand that country much better and know what else I would like to do there if I am ever able to go back for a while. I also went on a cruise a few years ago that went to Antarctica. That's pretty much the only way the average person can see that continent.
