At what point did you / will you take the coronavirus epidemic seriously?

I don't want to get on a cruise ship that holds 5000 people either. Several of the more recent ones that I've taken were closer to half that.

Spending the time on the cruise ship is not why I go. It's to visit locations that I've never been to before. Last January I went on a two week cruise to New Zealand. Now I understand that country much better and know what else I would like to do there if I am ever able to go back for a while. I also went on a cruise a few years ago that went to Antarctica. That's pretty much the only way the average person can see that continent.

I told my wife that if I went on a cruise, it would first be an Alaskan cruise. My son went on one and came back with amazing pics and a cache of halibut, a portion of which he generously gifted me. That's a cruise I could do.

Go for it. I've done one Alaskan cruise and quite enjoyed it.

That was the best cruise ever. We saw a lot of Chile from Santiago on south, went through the Straights of Magellan and visited the two southernmost cities on the earth, Punta Arenas and Ushuaia. Spent four days cruising along the Antarctic Peninsula including going down a narrow passage full of icebergs. The ship needed several tries before conditions were right to pull that off. Antarctica is a beautiful place, but very hostile to humans. Lots of penguins, seals, whales, and sea birds.

Once in the Atlantic we visited the Falkland Islands and a number of places in Argentina plus one stop in Uruguay. The cruise took two weeks, but highly recommended if you want to see a bunch of stuff that you've never seen before. We went as part of a Fun For Less tour, but you could do it on your own just as well, without all of the off-ship tours included.

Elitist. Obnoxious. Insensitive. Cruises are not really for me, but they employ or benefit economically a lot of people, and many enjoy them.

So it looks like this may have been a reporting anomaly, as week over week daily new cases are down significantly today. But yeah, we are definitely going the wrong direction (along with the rest of the western world).

Yeah, I guess they were having trouble getting the numbers yesterday? Looks like they went down a little, but we're consistently higher now. This thing is out of control. The good news is we're getting better at treating this, and looks like an effective vaccine is coming soon, but the bad news is this winter is going to be ugly. Stay safe, my friends!

I don't get cruises. My wife has been on over a dozen cruises, and I've never been on a one. She suggested we go on a cruise shortly after we were married, and I told her I would go if she could get rid of the other 5,000 people that would be sharing in our unique adventure.

Every cruise I'v'e been on (maybe 3 or 4?) was an absolute blast. Especially since I got SCUBA certified. I went on an eastern Caribbean cruise and it was nothing short of amazing-- a week of playing on the beaches, snorkeling, or scuba diving or whatever at a bunch of different islands that would be insanely expensive just to get to otherwise. And the food is great, too. And I don't hate the being on a ship part, either. I dunno, it's just fun.

I'm with you. Only been on one cruise, but I thought it was awesome.

I know there's a pile of people on the boat with me, but it didn't ever really feel crowded. Dining was essentially like going to a restaurant. We'd also grab food and go find a place to sit out on the deck where there weren't any people - and it really wasn't hard to find places where there aren't people.

If you want to go to the shows, there will be people there. But no different than any show you'd go to at home.

And as you say - the ports are great. Beaches, snorkeling, fishing charter, just checking out the local sites. We did excursions at half of the stops and just wandered on our own for the others. Had a great time - my wife is anxiously awaiting boats opening up again and scheduling our next trip. I'd love to do Alaska, but she's less interested in places that aren't warm. We did the baja and down the west coast with 4 stops in Mexico. Next will be Caribbean. I'm not sure what's not to like. Good food. Easy travel from one stop to the next. I'll definitely be going again.

I did a short (3-day) Bahamas Disney cruise a couple years ago with a friend. Disney's ships are amazing, but you pay a premium for it. I enjoyed it and would do it again. You travel at night, so most of the day time is spent on shore. Seems like a good way to see a little bit of a lot of places while being relatively comfortable during the travel time (as opposed to taking a train or plane). Not sure I'd do a Caribbean cruise again though. Rather do something where there are more interesting things to see, like Alaska or the Mediterranean.
