Being "fine with Doge" and immigration are things with which we disagree, fine. However, when PAC asked what made you happy, you gave Trump passing grades for Doge and immigration, but with the need for a tweak in how the message is delivered. I'm puzzled at responses like this. I see what's happening and dread how our norms and values are being dismantled, not to mention how the constitution is being shredded. Conservatives seem fine with this as long as someone wraps the package in fancy gift wrap with a bow instead of a brown paper bag. This is why I can no longer abide conservatism or republicanism. Sure, we democrats may be weird, but we are not obtuse quislings.

I think Trump could package Doge a lot better. Instead he takes the bull in a china shop approach. For me Doge is the first honest attempt to dig into government spending and corruption and do something about it.

For the record I do not support Trump's Ukraine policy. I think the rest of the world should kick Russian's ass.

Trump's daily displays of historical ignorance are amazing. And btw, while certainly catastrophic, the Soviet Union lost a little more than half the number Trump throws around. But maybe he's including the millions who died before and after the war because of Stalin (e.g., forced famines and the gulags). That Trump is apparently mystified why we like Germany and Japan but not Russia, or why the French have anything to celebrate about WWII, demonstrates yet again how stupid he truly is.

Some things that make MAGA actions more concerning including:

Ignoring due process, despite court rulings.

Wrongfully deporting people who had legal status to be in the country

Targeting students and others who engage in speech MAGA doesn't like and deporting them.

Requesting access to social media at ports and borders and scrutinizing visitors for being critical of Trump

Deporting people (some of whom who have not been "illegal") to places like El Salvador or Libya.

Nabbing people off the street cruelly.

Knowingly spreading lies such as the whole Haitians are eating dogs to inflame resentment. The rhetoric is unlike anything other recent officials have said.

Shutting down avenues for legal immigration..

Performatively offering asylum for Afrikaners but shutting it down for pretty much everyone else.

Broad embargoes for visitors from a variety of counties, all of them. Curiously all from non-white places.

Threatening to arrest the governor of a state.

ICE increasingly acting as a national police force and arresting citizens for issues not related to immigration.

Thanks Frank for this thoughtful response I think you have summed up a lot of the concerns that I have heard as well as giving me a few more to consider, from the position of the political Left. I am a little naive on this subject in general. While some of these items I might see a little bit differently, you have shown me that need more understanding in particular regarding legal immigration status. Seems as though Trump is trying to cast himself as a sort of vigilante "lone ranger" trying to fix the immigration problem by "damning the torpedoes" and just gettin' it done. I think he does this in part to make the Left sort of look like (to conservatives) as sort of a bunch of "HOA Karens" trying to appeal to the authority of a seemingly clunky and overly tedious immigration law, officiated by understaffed immigration courts that bog down and effectively neuter the intent of the whole process. I think on balance that despite Trumps approach which I also dislike, he wins on the PR front, which he badly needs after losing some on economic and other issues recently.

The disappointing thing to me is that Congress has been talking about this issue for well over 30 years with very little action. I remember thinking as a teenager how it was wrong to exploit cheap illegal labor that isn't afforded rights or fair wages, and is afraid to seek due process when they are exploited. I was in favor of a concept that Bush Jr. pushed early in his term, which afforded a one-time path to citizenship for illegals presently in the country, and then tightening up the border and enforcement thereafter.
