Trump and Musk won't stop until the China tariff rate is 42069% and all trade between our countries stops entirely. China will rapidly shift to other countries (we amount for 1/7 of their exports). The US will attemp to shift, only to find that we have no friends anymore and no manufacturing ability for years for the items and methods we want. The US's standard of living will crater. China will barely notice, except that it will find stronger support among fellow nations to treat the US as a pariah. China will divest itself of US dollars, because it has no need to trade with the US. This, in turn, will cause US inflation to skyrocket.
We are screwed in so many unbelievable ways because the moron in charge doesn't understand... anything.
There's a really strong argument that the screws should be put to China and it's long overdue. We got along fine before they became an integral part of the supply chain -- but Covid revealed some enormous problems relating to China occupying this position. Imagine a country that's closer to Nazi Germany in system of government (minus the genocidal mania) than the Soviet Union, meaning they share a lot of Nazi Germany's ability with relation to industrial capacity along with collectivist, tyrannical aspects too. They don't share the USSR's tendency towards inefficiency. I don't want to equate China to Nazis, again they're not genocidal maniacs, they're not the most evil people in history. But their system of government is much closer to Nazi German fascism than people realize. The profit motive was alive and well -- see e.g. Ferdinand Porsche, Alibaba, BYD.
China's role in the Fentanyl crisis alone is grounds for reverting back to a point before their introduction to the WTO.
All that said, Trump's decision to go against the entire world has been enormously stupid and costly. I think that if decoupling from China is his primary motive -- then why also go after the EU, India, Canada, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc.? Shouldn't we be going for MORE free trade with these other countries to achieve the primary motive? Trump's actions will only drive these countries more towards China rather than away (well, maybe not India).
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Yes, the screws need to be put to China. But as you note, taking on the rest of the world at the same time is idiotic. It makes China a victim like the rest of the world and drives them all together. The rest of the world is lining up behind China is this. Simply insane. Dow closes down again.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

The best way to put the screws to China is through soft power and working with other countries. See, for example, the Trans Pacific Partnership. If we want to set the rules for international engagement in a way that won't favor China, we need to be engaged in the international community. If we don't want to drive Austrailia into closer trade relations with China, we shouldn't be trying to put the screws to them in so many ways.
Trump is an sociopath who views relationships as purely transactional. If there's no immediate benefit, he doesn't see a point to the relationship.
The Hillbilly's comments about Chinese "peasants" again show that he is not ready for prime time and way in over his head in this job. What an embarrassment.

Went to the protest in SLC on Saturday. I enjoyed being with people who share a lot of my concerns. A lot of older folks there. It was nice realizing that we are not alone.
Not my usual crowd, very much a renaissance fair bunch (shout out to Shaka) with a good dose of profanity on signs.
Frankly, I was surprised by how many people showed up. I suspect close to 10,000 got there, so that was impressive. mrs. myboynoah was the primary driver behind our attendance, which surprised me.
I was in Atlanta when we saw the protest march down the street. I wasn't measuring but I'd be willing to bet it was two miles long of people walking down two lanes of traffic. It was impressive. It took a good hour to go by us as we sat and ate lunch in a restaurant on the protest route.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.
