I get everything you are saying, I just don't think you are living in reality. There are reasonable counterpoints to all your arguments, and when the score is tied, and the person voting has to make their decision, that is the decision I am interested in understanding. Look, I am a Ute fan on a Cougar website. I like seeing into the mindset I don't understand. Sometimes it informs me and I change my mind, sometimes not. If the left willfully refusing to understand what is influencing swing-Trump supporters, I am not liking the Lefts chances next Presidential election.
perhaps, the Tariffs will destroy the economy, and hand the Left control of the white house next cycle, but I have a hard time seeing translate to continued success if they don't also change focus. If Newsom is defeated in the gubernatorial race in a couple years after breaking with the party extremes on some fringe issues, that will be telling, IMO.
I really like political compromise. I don't see any of that from either side, but yes if you force me to pick which side has stinkier shit on compromise, I'll concede that it is the Right, presently.
Yeah, that is quite the charge. Where do I part with reality? Trump didn't win in a landslide. So I'm curious where you get your news. I'm guessing podcast land, Daily Wire, Glenn Beck etc.
There will be irreparable harm by then, but I expect the 2026 midterms to be a bloodbath for republicans. But then I remember the pathetic state of the democratic party and I get depressed.
There are some good democrats out there. (Jared Polis for example). Time will tell if they will gain control of the party. But as of a month ago a majority of the democratic base favors moderation. The other thing moderate democrats have going for them is all the dumb economic policies Trump is doing is also favored by the crazy elements of the left. Easy to campaign against.

I don't think AOC and Bernie like these tariffs. This all Trump.
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

So, with us now negotiating away all of these tariffs, we won't be getting super rich anymore? And I guess no need to for the highly anticipated External Revenue Service.
GOOD!
Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
I enjoy listening to opposing views, and try to keep an open mind. I can’t say I agree with everything Wally has said, but I was coming around to the honesty of his opinion. Until you said this. Landslide can be a relative term, but I don’t think it should describe Trumps 2024 victory in any way. Makes me question your objectivity a bit. What voices or sources are you listening to that have convinced you of this?
Apologies you are correct it was not a "landslide." I am just not used to having republicans win the popular vote in my adult lifetime. I guess I should have used the term "convincing" or maybe more accurately the most astounding political "comeback" victory I am aware of outside of Nelson Mandela. If your concern is that I am MAGA masquerading as an independent/moderate, I am ashamed to say that I am probably more of a contrarian dickhead than adherent to any "side" as it helps me to argue both sides to develop my opinions, which are always changing. Being on this board with its nearly unanimous disdain for Trump as me thinking it can't be so simple as just disagreeing with everything a particular individual and his followers do? Right? As such here I am positing positions to that extent that I am happy to see some here debunk.
As far as my sources, I try to read or listen to sources on both sides of the political aisle of varying extremity. I will admit that I am most interested in understanding where people really are on issues rather than where the media says they are on said issues. I am not even interested in what my own opinion is as much as how others are thinking and approaching things in these unchartered waters. Polling in general has not yet corrected it's left-leaning bias, and the inability of historically venerable institutions of information to maintain neutrality and create believable narratives has me interested in how demographics and perceptions are changing and where they are getting their information (especially younger people). The 'Joe Rogan Effect' on the most recent election I think was an interesting concept, but Trump did a whole lotta shows and podcasts. I am seeing a lot of other podcasters, influencers, streamers etc. putting out political material and it is very interesting to see how they boil down the talking points and frankly some are doing as good a job as outlets like CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc. So most recently, I am listening to an assortment of those types on both sides of the aisle. Do I agree with them? certainly not and usually their understanding of how the world works is stunted in different regards, but so was the legacy media's, and moreover, the legacy media seems to at times be deliberately misleading, which is less forgivable than simple naivety on the part of a podcaster/streamer. So I think that is where Young people are at: they don't trust the highly processed and polished stories that the "grown ups" or "authorities" are telling them, and prefer information from "real" people who seem to be informed.

BTW, I enjoy bantering with you.
I have a news aggregator app (Ground News) that go to for the "actual news" but like i responded to chrisenrut, i am really interested in how younger people are getting their information. i will say that in the past few weeks i have entertained myself at the gym listening to these young male twitch streamers break down current events. there is one guy that has a bernie bro turned trump supporter conservative vibe, and this other that is basically all the stereotypes of a pro-Palestine protestor. these guys have pretty large audiences and they record their streams to youtube where they pick up greater audiences rivaling and exceeding legacy media numbers.
i have listened to the Young Turks podcast people and a few others (much fewer liberal options than conservative) podcasts as well as the occasional Rogan (usually dumb) as well as Lex Fridman. Lex tries to maintain neutrality, but i think he is just too adjacent the other podcasters that he will for the time being get lumped into the conservative crowd. I did enjoy Fridman's extended interview with Zelensky which occurred a couple months before the oval office incident, but i did not listen to until afterward.
These are all not proper journalistic outlets, but like i said i am interested in what is informing the masses more than factual news reporting right now.
Trump and Musk won't stop until the China tariff rate is 42069% and all trade between our countries stops entirely. China will rapidly shift to other countries (we amount for 1/7 of their exports). The US will attemp to shift, only to find that we have no friends anymore and no manufacturing ability for years for the items and methods we want. The US's standard of living will crater. China will barely notice, except that it will find stronger support among fellow nations to treat the US as a pariah. China will divest itself of US dollars, because it has no need to trade with the US. This, in turn, will cause US inflation to skyrocket.
We are screwed in so many unbelievable ways because the moron in charge doesn't understand... anything.
Now if you're a lawyer who represents a client Trump doesn't like you can be harassed at the border. Trump is making us less free. That's not an exaggeration, and it sucks.

Yep. Truth is we need stuff from China. Finding alternative sources will be difficult and expensive. If this doesn't get resolved soon, America passing will start in earnest and China's influence will start to prevail as other countries establish more secure economic relationships with each other.
The Trump Team is so quick to announce "such and such country wants to talk about lowering tariffs!" and that they are going to negotiate soon. Didn't they say the Japanese Prime Minister is coming to DC to negotiate next week? Unless a miracle happens and both sides agree quickly on set tariff levels (highly unlucky), this is going to take time (months) to resolve particular issues. And Trump says he wants to discuss other non-tariff-related issues as well. There will be no agreement, although Trump is lie and say the other side agreed to "blah blah blah blah." But nothing will be official.
And the Trump Team wants to do this with 70 or more different markets. There is no time and not staff. These things get complicated very fast. On Japan, is Trump going to insist on 0% tariffs on rice? That will never happen. Trump complains that the Japanese don't buy U.S. autos. Guess what; no tariffs on U.S. autos. Autos is very complicated with a number of factors that inhibit market access. But let's get serious, U.S. automakers have little to no real interest in the Japanese market. It's a market where they like to sell larger SUVs as a novelty items for high-end Japanese buyers.
After a furious rally early today, the markets have come back to near where they started, some even in the red. Something is going to have to give here. And that is Trump declaring victory, showing how all these countries are seeking negotiations as evidence, keeping tariffs on China, but suspending them on markets that are willing to come to the table. Europe is an outlier that screw this up.

Went to the protest in SLC on Saturday. I enjoyed being with people who share a lot of my concerns. A lot of older folks there. It was nice realizing that we are not alone.
Not my usual crowd, very much a renaissance fair bunch (shout out to Shaka) with a good dose of profanity on signs.
Frankly, I was surprised by how many people showed up. I suspect close to 10,000 got there, so that was impressive. mrs. myboynoah was the primary driver behind our attendance, which surprised me.
