Newsom could be a strong candidate. I think that he is going to walk a fine line with shifting away his stances and reelection in California at the end of 2026. His strongest position is as a sitting Dem governor with a distanced position to the woke identity politics.

I don't trust him. He is slimy as the day is long.

Maybe Trump will so royally screw stuff up that the swing-voting public swings back to a dem candidate next presidential cycle out of pure desperation (kind of like they did for Trump this cycle), but right now I am not seeing Dems letting go of the stuff that is sinking their ship. I say this as a person who is absolutely a 50/50 swing voter in presidential elections and never once in 3 chances voted for Trump. I actually really want to rag on Trump, but the psychosis on the left about just hating him so fervently no matter what and calling him Hitler and a fascist at every turn, has the contrarian in me sort of wanting to give him a chance and see what he does. I am finding myself a product of exactly what JL is describing to you.
Most of my classical democrat and moderate conservative friends are just like you.

His stance is correct and overdue. But blame does not need to be shifted. So much scolding around calling Trump a fascist (which he is and proving to be more so each day) talking about his subservience to Putin, around calling Musk's harmful actions, and asserting that he was going gut the federal workforce etc.

Trump's awfulness far far outpaced democrats dumb woke shit. But to direct ire at them for all the shit Trump keeps doing is unhelpful.

He is not Hitler, but he is a fascist or authoritarian if you will. He proves that everyday. This double standard of democrats needing to be more restrained in their dialogue while MAGA has been insanely uncouth without pushback is obnoxious.

The psychosis word is better applied the other direction. Destroying our alliances and treaties. Randomly initiating trade wars, bending the knee for Putin, sabotaged various government programs, that's insanity

It's insane to vote for a guy who tried to over through an election via violence and has genuine fascists in his regime.

If you look at all the insane shit Trump is doing and still vote for him because you are annoyed with the shrill libs that isn't great justification

it is a distraction, that affects maybe 100 people in college, most of whom no one cares about unless fox does a story

national candidates shouldnt be talking about it, and individuals bringing it up like an important issue feeds the histeria of the country and is a direct cause of people losing focus on actual important things on a national scale

                • Vote for a TV personality, get a TV personality president:

The exchange ended with Mr. Trump telling Mr. Duffy that he had to hire people from M.I.T. as air traffic controllers. These air traffic controllers need to be “geniuses,” he said...
Mr. Collins made the point that they should not wield a blunt instrument and cleave off everyone from the V.A. They needed to be strategic about it. Mr. Trump agreed with Mr. Collins, saying they ought to retain the smart ones and get rid of the bad ones.
Vote for a old billionaire narcissist who is suceptible to flattery, get an entire cabinet of sycophants who can't govern:

Mr. Musk, who wore a suit and tie to Thursday’s meeting instead of his usual T-shirt after Mr. Trump publicly ribbed him about his sloppy appearance, defended himself by saying that he had three companies with a market cap of tens of billions of dollars, and that his results spoke for themselves...
He aggressively defended himself, reminding the cabinet secretaries that he had built multiple billion-dollar companies from the ground up and knew something about hiring good people.
The one redeeming thing about this whole fiasco is the richly deserved schadenfreude for Rubio, who knowingly aligned himself with this shitshow:

Mr. Musk was not being truthful, Mr. Rubio said. What about the more than 1,500 State Department officials who took early retirement in buyouts? Didn’t they count as layoffs? He asked, sarcastically, whether Mr. Musk wanted him to rehire all those people just so he could make a show of firing them again. Then he laid out his detailed plans for reorganizing the State Department...
Mr. Musk was unimpressed. He told Mr. Rubio he was “good on TV,” with the clear subtext being that he was not good for much else. Throughout all of this, the president sat back in his chair, arms folded, as if he were watching a tennis match.

I'm not quite sold on his stance yet. This was an interview with Charlie Kirk. I'll wait to see if he is consistent during an interview with a centrist or progressive journalist. If he ends up being consistent, then that is a step in the right direction. Boomer and Gen Z democratic pols reliving or cosplaying the protest movement of the 60s ain't going to cut it. Acoustic guitars and Pete Seeger songs? Sorry Woody, guitars don't in fact kill fascists.

Jared Polis and Josh Shapiro types are the future. Let's all pray they are the types that break through. If 2028 ends with president Vance

Woody Guthrie was right about Trump's dad when he say about him being a racist.

Woody was quite perceptive of the injustices and corruption of the world. Pete as well. They just had a blind spot for the injustices committed by their philosophical heros. Outstanding songwriters though.

                          • So, looks like Trump is going to try and modify the Public Student Loan Forgiveness plan through Executive Order. I look forward to the rational debate on why Biden couldn't streamline the processes to carry the PSLF into effect, but Trump is totally able to gum up the works or restrict the forgiveness program based on what causes the applicant supports.

So, Trump has a problem with doctors trying to investigate how hormone therapy might affect AIDS treatment, cancer, fertility, asthma, and periods. Trump just doesn't like science. Especially when the science might up helping someone the GOP hates.

Also, mice can't be transgender. Mice especially can't be transgender when they've been gonadectomized.

It will be tough to screw it up worse than Biden did.
