Look. We can excoriate everyone in the media for being as clueless as everyone else was about the war. That's fair. You can also hold them to a higher standard than the governments and the agencies who should have known better. That's fine also.

But if someone speaks the truth, can we not accept that at face value? Do you view every media source behind the lens of what they were saying during the war? They were all saying the same thing, dude, and then they had to play catchup with responsible reporting when we all started realizing what a catastrophe it was.

I gave him credit (stopped clock). The problem is, Mr. Stephens doesn't think (even today) that we got Iraq wrong. He has recently argued for a full-scale invasion of Syria (among many other neoconservative authors). The dude's idol is Paul Wolfowitz for Christ's sake.

Be careful what you pick up, it just might bite you.

If he's still that hawkish, even after Iraq, then he's an idiot on that front. I won't listen to anything he says about the military. I'm with you there.

But here's the point I'm arguing, again. I didn't know anything about his war stance before I read that. I still agree with the article after your revelation. If Stephens believes in the war after all we have seen, then that should be on his epitaph. But he can still be praised when he reports correctly. I'm in no way arguing that the media should be held to any standard that it doesn't itself adhere to. They get stuff right, and they get stuff wrong. But the alternative to burning the traditional media house down is to trust citizen journalists and pundits who agree with our worldview, who most of the time have no need for correction in their reporting. Are they going to tell the truth when it doesn't resonate with their readership? I don't know for every entity out there, but I still trust traditional media to get the story right more than it does wrong, even if the correction takes longer than it should.

Sorry. That is a bridge too far for me. Kristol, Krauthammer, Kagan, Podhoretz, Stephens, the (now-defunct-)PNAC signatories, et al... those unrepentant fucks can all go ESAD.

Sort of related to this, but you would be a fan of Barbara Lee, democratic congresswoman from CA. After 9/11, she was the lone 'no' vote of the entire house for the Bush war resolution. She had the foresight to see what could happen with that sweeping resolution, and she was proven right.

                • Anyone else seeing this #TheResistance or #Resistance hashtag popping up all over? It's like a liberal Tea Party. If the Democrats encourage this, it'll be like they took stupid pills from the last election and double down on alienating suburban and rural whites.

If I weren't so lazy, I'd be there. Why celebrate the presidency? It's devalued. That's the message.

                        • I'm sad I have meeting I can't miss at 1:00. Even so, I may pop up to Columbus Circle right at noon to observe this spectacle with my own eyes.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
