This is spot-on. Not to get all Freud-y, but I think a lot of his problems stem from the fact that not only did he have a troubled relationship with his parents, he has always been surrounded by enablers and sycophants who are unable to curb his behavior or intervene in any way. Nobody has ever loved him enough to tell him no. And so every relationship--personal or political--is ultimately transactional for him. This is undoubtedly one of the reasons why he has a long history as a sexual predator.

I'm usually not a fan of armchair psychologizing, but in his case it's unavoidable. His hangups are not only on display for all to see but they will certainly end up affecting countless people.

There may yet exist some Clackiverse in which Trump was a decent, honorable dude whose parents loved him.

          That's not this one, though.

People with those attributes develop them because things they experience in their formative years.

1 out of every 27 people is a sociopath. Pretty good evidence that it is innate, and not environmental.

It's both. We don't have a designation for a sociopath diagnosis in the DSM, but those attributes fall under anti-social disorder. Genetics matter, but so do their experiences, the attachment styles they form.

A one in 27 ratio doesn't point to it being solely genetic.

EDIT: A lot of times the terms sociopathy and psychopathy get used interchangeably but in some contexts there's differences. Psychopathy is usually used to imply something more innate. Sociopathy alludes to a condition more informed by environment. I've heard explained like genetics load the gun and experiences and traumas fire it.

You can have multiple siblings raised in exactly the same environment where one is a sociopath and the others are not. Happens all the time.

The clinical definition of a sociopath is someone incapable of feeling empathy or love or compassion. Sure seems genetic to me.

Jeff, I'm not making remotely controversial statements here. It's pretty basic psychology. Psychopathy is often used interchangeably with sociopathy.

Not everyone in the same family has he exact same experiences, tendencies etc., so again, nothing simple about your conclusion.

Sociopathy isn't something you can diagnose in the US, neither is psychopathy.

Trump seems to love his kids and grandkids and they seem to love him back.

"Seems to" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Sociopaths learn early in life to try to mimic normal behavior.

Sociopaths see people as objects, including their spouses and kids. A means to an end. Remember when Trump talked about how hot his daughter was and if she weren't his daughter, he would go after her? She is an object to him.

Trump clearly sees other people as objects. The second you show an ounce of disloyalty or become un-useful to him, you are out. He is the center of his own universe. Sociopaths are also good at lying. All of that is classic sociopath behavior.

If you want to blow your mind, check out this book. Reading it was one of the most eye-opening experiences I have had. It was written by a researcher who spent her career studying and providing therapy to sociopaths.

PS: I was slightly off. It is 1 in 25.
