But I think Trump really means this one.
is there no limits to what can be done on tariffs via executive order.

wouldve been great for congress to ensure they have to agree but dems love the tariffs biden could decide on so shrug

You know for a fact that I am not... Happily, I've evolved somewhat and what once troubled me deeply I now see as amusing, informative, and even endearing occasionally.

A president should not be able to implement new tariffs unilaterally. It's a tax, and Constitutionally that is for Congress. However, in his first term he wanted tariffs and someone found an existing forgotten law from the 1940s that says the president can institute a tariff if it has to do with national security. That was all the license he felt he needed and as far as I know the courts haven't weighed in. So if Trump wants to put in the 25% tariffs on day one as he says, avocados from Mexico are related to national security until the courts or Congress says otherwise.

To bolster the "it's a clever tactic" argument someone on CB said, "Remember, Trump literally wrote The Art of the Deal," which is funny because (a) he literally didn't write it, and (b) the book may be entertaining but it's worthless from a business perspective--remember his Wharton professor said "Donald Trump was the dumbest goddam student I ever had." Trump's lawyers have threatened Wharton with a lawsuit if it were to release his transcript.
But PAC, Trump is an honest man of the people

          • Trump laying on tariffs and he doesn't even have a basic understanding of how they work. They are not a tax paid by the other country. They are taxes paid by people in this country that import them. What an idiot.

Hey, but just think: if we slap avocados with a 25% tariff, that will increase the price of avocados. That means that domestic farmers that aren't currently in the market will be incentivized to grow avocados, farmers being well-known to have the ability to switch tree crops on a dime. And then, once farmers who can only afford to grow avocados at the increased price have entered the market, they will certainly be willing to drop their price below their production cost, right? I mean, the goal can't be permanent price increases across the board, right? Trump couldn't be that stupid, right?

Also, we import 91% of the potash used in the fertilizer to grow the crops. And we import the labor to pick most of the crops. How bad could tariffs on groceries plus tariffs on production items to grow the groceries plus enforcement action against the labor to deliver the groceries really be?

In his first term Trump had quite a few around him to check his worst impulses. He's since learned how things work and I think there will be a lot fewer of those checks on him this time. It won't be pretty because so many of his impulses are just plain idiotic. It's not going to go very well. We're in for a crappy economy.

He's thinking six steps ahead of you. I mean, think about all the time his advisors like Miller and Bannon had to study and think about these things (while they served their prison sentences).

I couldn't remember for sure. I assumed he meant after taking office, since the election has been over a while now, and that glorious bastard Putin hasn't let up.

My mistake. I really thought we could take Trump as his word this time. He seemed so confident and sincere

                          • This Rogan podcast with Marc Andreesen is fantastic. Even if you don’t like either, it’s worth a listen. Andreesen is always an interesting interview and brings a different perspective. It makes me a lot more optimistic about Trump 2.0.

Rogan has some strange beliefs but that doesn't negate the point that he's one of the best at giving both sides a fair shot. I wanted to get a better sense for JD Vance so I listened to his Rogan interview. It was interesting and fair. It then kicked me right into Rogan's interview with Fetterman which was also interesting and fair. Both interviews presented far better pictures of these men than anything I've seen in the mainstream press.

                              • If you're a true libertarian, this read is a good blueprint on how Trump will likely reshape the federal government during his term. It isn't hopeful but probably is realistic on things we should look out for.
