As you well know, the similarities are supplying the fighting forces of an occupied country with modern weapons while they do the actually fighting. The differences are that Soviet Union/Russia never really considered Afghanistan their own turf and did not threaten nuclear arms - Afghanistan is more like Vietnam in that regard. Your concern about a nuclear show-down has validity in that the Soviet Union's failure in Afghanistan helped bring down the iron curtain and a similar failure by Russia in Ukraine might bring down Putin. But Putin could still retain power if Russia evacuates Ukraine. If a nuclear exchange occurs - he would surely lose power. I don't think a nuclear show-down becomes a greater threat as long as the Ukraine conflict does not cross into Russian borders in a major way.
Provoking a major escalation is the concern. What if Russia were to nuke Kyiv? I think things could spiral out of control after something like that. Putin's the wild card here.

The trick has been to escalate our support slowly. Pour just enough support into Ukraine so that they can push Russia back, but not so much (as you say) that they become a real military threat beyond their border.

Very nice video with subtitles of a Ukrainian soldier returning to his recently liberated village and talking to his young brothers.

      • I love seeing this, but is it structurally sound?

        Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

There's a certain pucker factor when you throw a live grenade. Some people fold under the pressure.

Those scenes in Band of Brothers where Joe Toye survives two closecalls in succession are amusing on a TV show, but probably left him as scarred mentally as Bastogne and losing his leg.
