Nope. He was safely to the side and behind the prospective trajectory of the car. Dude put the car in gear and was dead-- he didn't drag anybody as the falsified report claimed. Unless that particular model of car can lurch sideways he was in no danger at all. The cop was rightly indicted for murder by a grand jury. I don't doubt a second-degree murder conviction is far-off.

    • Toes. Toes were definitely at risk.

      • What is stunning is the quickness of the reaction. Car is revved and "boom", the guy is dead about one second later. Incredible.

The attempted coverup makes the case look worse. I wonder why they lied like that when they knew video footage would be available.

The only reason I could think of is they were planning the TexTechCoug tactic of the video just vanishing.

Um, no. If he didn't want to get dragged, perhaps he should have considered not grabbing onto the driver or letting go of the driver when he realized he wasn't going to stop. The cop is an idiot.

My thought too. Only reason there is any risk at all is because the cop leaned in the window and tried to stop the guy - looked to me like he was trying to turn off the keys.

So - the guy gets stopped on a missing front plate. Because the guy has no license (or ID), the cop wants to confirm who he is. The cop even indicates that he believes the guy is driving without a license. The cop wants to positively ID the guy - which is smart. He asks the guy to get out of the vehicle - also the right thing to do if he's trying to control the situation while ID'ing the guy.

But when the guy starts the car and decides to drive off - the instant reaction is to shoot the guy. There doesn't seem to be any obvious risk the the public or the cop. I suppose if the guy is a dangerous felon with an outstanding warrant and just hasn't been ID'd yet, that is a possibility. But it's a stretch to say that the cop thought this guy was dangerous.

I'm curious if the driver was drunk. No indication, though he did hand a bottle of alcohol out the window that had been on the floor. And he did seem to be kind of out of it in answering questions.

              • You know you done effed up when the prosecutor, referring to the cops pulling the guy over for a missing front plate, calls it a "chicken-crap stop."

I have been stopped a time or two for not having a front plate and agree it is indeed a chicken-crap stop.

I don't have a front plate on two of our vehicles. I get bored when driving and count how many vehicles skip the front plate. Seems to be about 30% or so in Utah.

Dude wants to get in on the police brutality bandwagon, only, he's missing most of the information and making up fake details about the arrested driver being injured by police.

Something tells me he was looking for a little celebrity hero treatment for catching the cops being bad, unfortunately his narrative didn't fit what really happened - so he just made some things up.

This is precisely the reason that I would think that cops should support body cams.
